System: Switch
Release date: January 7, 2024
Developer: Falcom
Publisher: Marvelous

Despite arguably being dethroned as Falcom’s flagship series over the years by the Trails series, Ys has nonetheless seen a rising amount of success since the release of Lacrimosa of Dana. The standalone nature of the games make it an easy series to jump onto at any point, and although it’s a difficult series to access in its entirety outside of PC ports thanks to several of the games being decades old and trapped on outdated platforms, it’s gradually making its way onto modern consoles through remakes and remasters. Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is the latest chapter in Adol’s expansive adventures to come to Nintendo Switch, and is another strong instalment despite its age and notably different gameplay style from its successors.

Retro Studios music RPG

At one point in time, Retro Studios apparently had a project in development as a music RPG.

The company shipped Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on Wii U in 2014. After that, there was essentially a decade-long gap without a new game from Retro Studios. Tropical Freeze was ported to Nintendo Switch a few years ago and Metroid Prime Remastered dropped in 2023, but outside of that, nothing made it to market.

Freedom Wars Remastered

September 17: Freedom Wars Remastered is in development for Switch, Bandai Namco just revealed. A release is planned for January 10, 2025.

Freedom Wars originally came to the PlayStation Vita in 2014. Sony published the original version, but the publisher has shifted to Bandai Namco this time around.

Carmen Sandiego release date

The previously-announced reboot of Carmen Sandiego just secured a release date. Gameloft will be bringing it out on March 4, 2025.

The upcoming title was previously revealed last September. Gameloft initially shared a Q1 2025 launch window.

Here’s an overview of the project:

In a recent interview, Nintendo producer Akira Otani spoke more about the origins of Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Otani, who has been working the series since Partners in Time on Nintendo DS, said that it’s been a challenge to match the franchise’s artwork with the in-game graphics. This is what partially promoted the decision to feature full 3D visuals on Mario & Luigi: Brothership and release it for Nintendo Switch.

Along with a new month, a new year also just started. Now that we’re in January, we want to know what you’ve been playing.

Things have been quiet the past couple of weeks in terms of releases. Still, there’s plenty to play out there. Did you get anything new for the holidays? Playing something from your backlog? No matter the case, let us know in the comments.

Zelda Echoes Wisdom Link to the Past sequel

A report that went under the radar seems to indicate that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom was originally planned to be a sequel to A Link to the Past.

Prior to the launch of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, some fans have pointed out that the game’s map was very reminiscent of the map from A Link to the Past. It turns out there’s apparently a reason for that. Before Nintendo and Grezzo settled on things like the Echoes and having Zelda take the starring role, the game was imagined as a sequel to the SNES classic. That changed once the project entered full development.

New Final Smashes Smash Bros.

With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate turning seven years old not too long ago, we’ve reached this sort of impasse within the series. Many are wondering where it’s headed next and how could it possibly be surpassed – especially given that Ultimate will be playable on Nintendo’s new hardware via backwards compatibility. We think the most likely solution is a new Smash game with fewer characters and stages, but with reworks and new moves provided to its veterans. One aspect of each fighter that could use a refresh are their Final Smashes. These powerful and cinematic moves are the cornerstone of each fighter’s moveset – in casual play, that is. But to this day, some fighters’ Final Smashes are outdated or no longer accurately represent them. We’ve come up with five particular characters who need new Final Smashes in the next Smash, as well as ideas for what those new attacks might look like.

It’s time for the newest North American Nintendo Download report for the week of January 2, 2025. The latest releases include Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana and more.

Yoshi's Woolly World Switch

Of all the Wii U titles that haven’t made the jump to Nintendo Switch, Yoshi’s Woolly World is absolutely one of the most deserving.

Early on in the Switch’s life span, Nintendo filled what would have otherwise been gaps in their release schedule with plenty of Wii U ports. Between Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, and especially Mario Kart 8, many of that console’s best-received titles found new life on Nintendo Switch. Lately though, we haven’t been seeing many Wii U ports at all. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition could be counted as one, but between the graphical overhaul and added story content, one could argue that it goes beyond that.

The point is, we likely won’t be seeing many more Wii U ports on Nintendo Switch or even Switch 2. Nintendo has, for the most part, ported all of its heavy hitters. However, we’re now talking about one particular Wii U game that has sort of fallen into obscurity: Yoshi’s Woolly World.
