Yacht Club Games posted a new blog today that covers the upcoming Specter Knight campaign from Shovel Knight in-depth. You can see some animated images and a rundown of the character’s different moves here.

As for when the Specter Knight campaign is launching, that’s still unknown at this point. Yacht Club is currently working on all campaigns at once – Specter Knight and King Knight – plus Body Swap and Battle Mode features.

Here’s the rundown from Yacht Club:

When Shovel Knight originally kicked off we focused entirely on making the original Shovel Knight campaign the absolute best! It’s the game we originally pitched and knew we wanted to spend all of our efforts and energy polishing the core campaign. After release, we gathered everyone’s impressions before cracking open the game once more to brew up Plague of Shadows! Plague Knight was a chance to build upon and deliver all new story, characters, and playstyle. We made many iterations (threw out a lot of ideas), and learned some great lessons on how best to extend and change up the existing Shovel Knight game world.

With that experience fresh in our minds, the team here is now working on all remaining campaigns and updates at once! That means Specter Knight, King Knight, Body Swap, and Battle Mode (for PC and consoles). That’s a lot more game — and it should arrive sooner than the wait between Shovel Knight and Plague Knight. Creating these updates simultaneously will allow us to plan more cohesively. How levels change between the two characters, how much time is needed for new mechanics/systems, stories interweaving, and so on. Once we’re nearing completion on one set of updates, we’ll be switching our focus to a single campaign to make sure it’s polished for release. Then we’ll be doing the same by switching to the next campaign! Here are some answers to the most frequent questions:

PlayStation and Xbox platforms have console-specific cameos in Shovel Knight in the form of Kratos and Battletoads respectively. There is exclusive content on Wii U and 3DS in the form of amiibo support, but there aren’t any Nintendo characters in the game.

Here’s what Yacht Club Games told Destructoid regarding the possibility of a Nintendo cameo:

“I wouldn’t say it [the door] is 100% closed, but I’d be surprised if it happened. That said, I would have said the same for the amiibo a year ago…”

It’d be very neat to see a Nintendo character in Shovel Knight. That being said, it’d have to be one that the Big N signs off on.

In celebration of having sold over one million copies, Yacht Club Games is readying two new themes for 3DS.

Here’s a look at the first one, titled “Shovel Knight Campfire Dream”:

And the second one for Plague Knight:

Both themes are due out on April 28 in North America. Europe will be receiving them on May 13.

In a blog post on Gamasutra, David D’Angelo from Yacht Club Games reveals that Shovel Knight has sold 1.2 million copies. 200,000 of those units come from retail.

D’Angelo has also provided a break down of amiibo sales thus far:

We hope to provide a very in-depth article about how the Shovel Knight amiibo was made soon. So stay tuned for that! In the meantime, here’s a bit about its sales so far. Believe it or not, we actually ordered over 200,000 units to be manufactured and shipped all over the world. We’ve currently sold through 180,000 of those units since the amiibo figure launched January 8th. 60,000 of those going to Europe and the rest going to North America. The sales for the amiibo figure are still strong, enough so that our North American distribution branch decided to order 30,000 more units!

Yacht Club Games just pushed out a new Shovel Knight update on Steam: version 2.2.1. The patch is intended to implement various fixes.

According to Yacht Club, other systems “will be updating in the near future”. We’ll let you know when it goes live on Wii U and 3DS. For now, read up on the full patch notes below.

The latest episode of the 8-4 Play podcast contains an interview with Yacht Club Games’ Sean Velasco and David D’Angelo. While speaking about Shovel Knight, the two developers mentioned that they’re still developing more content for the game. Once that’s done though, the team would be “silly” not to make a sequel. It was also reiterated that a follow-up title could be another NES-style game or something more in line with the SNES or Nintendo 64.

With the arrival of the Shovel Knight amiibo, the game itself has received an update. Version 2.2 is out now in North America on both Wii U and 3DS. It’s not yet available in Europe, but Yacht Club Games says it “should be rolling out to systems within the next week.”

Shovel Knight’s 2.2 patch also encompasses the 2.1 update, which adds amiibo support. Europe has had access to 2.1 since December while North America has been at 2.0 until today. You can find the notes for the two latest updates after the break.

Shovel Knight will soon be getting another update. Version 2.2 is already out on Steam, and will be published on other platforms in the near future, including Wii U and 3DS.

Shovel Knight’s latest update introduces a few small aspects, adjustments, and fixes. Head past the break for the full patch notes.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, Ian Flood and David D’Angelo from Yacht Club Games spoke all about Shovel Knight. One prominent topic was the Shovel Knight amiibo.

Speaking about how the figure came to be, the two developers stated:

David D’Angelo: That started in 2014, the possibility of it even happening – what it would look like, what it could do.

David: Yeah, Nintendo said “pitch us on it” when they showed us the New 3DS. We started chatting about ideas with amiibo and they asked us whether we wanted to formally pitch to do an amiibo. That kind of thing is strange, like you’re sending a paper to no-one! But the whole thing was shocking, really, they kept saying let’s move this forward, and we couldn’t believe it was going to happen.

Ian: The excitement leading up to it was something else. What was funny was that we were waiting for the announcement, website, trailer and stuff like that, and retailers kept leaking it. It was tricky to get the information out there. It’s one thing to leak that it’s a thing, but it’s another to leak that it’s in a game series it’s not! There was a lot of information around, and we couldn’t easily say it was wrong without talking about it fully.

Ian: Yeah, we had to say it was a mis-listing, so not denying everything. We had people getting pre-emptively mad about the release date, pricing. All mad at details that were incorrect. We’re pretty receptive online and tried to answer queries.

Ian: So we tried to calm everyone down and put out a definitive update with full details. But that was fun, a few guys were at PAX for the reveal at the Nindies@Night event, and we were all excited that we had prototypes in a box. The guys were keeping them under their coats at the hotel so that we kept a lid on it, yet the whole time that was happening images were online. It was a bubble where the guys at the event were keeping a secret, but EVERYONE in the entire would knew about it.

But still, it was an immensely exciting day with everything coming together.
