A few months ago, Nintendo filed a trademark for what looks like a controller with a free-form display. It was just published for all to see today. Of course, we do have the GamePad which offers something slightly similar, but this would be something completely different.

Here’s an abstract:

“A non-limiting example information processing apparatus comprises a housing, and a first portion of the housing is formed in an elliptical form when viewing from the front. A display panel and a touch panel constitute one main surface of the first portion. Holes are formed in left and right end portions of the display panel and the touch panel, and two operation sticks are provided through the two holes. When viewing the first portion from the front, an area except key tops of the operation sticks becomes a display area.”

The patent makes note of a few things, including:

– Using a display panel allowing stereoscopic view
– Can make an aspect ratio thereof comparable to a ratio (16:9) of a wide screen
– Touch panel on the front surface of the display panel
– A touch panel of an electrostatic capacitance system or a resistance film system can be used
– Card slot

Finally, some images from the patent:

The patent seems to fit in with rumors about Sharp working with Nintendo on a free-form display. In the filing, it’s essentially an elliptical touch screen covering the device’s entire top surface area.

As far as the images go, don’t take them at face value. They’re really there just as a means to explain what the patent is about, so the device pictured isn’t a product that will be launched as a final product.

During last month’s Nintendo Direct, a short promo aired for Yo-kai Watch involving Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime and Bill Trinen. The third part of that has now been made available. Give it a look below.

Here’s an off-beat (but nice!) video from Nintendo that has Mario surprising people with gifts:

The Game Awards saw a 20 percent jump in viewership this year. 2.3 million people tuned in, up from last year’s count of nearly 2.0 million.

While nothing is set in stone, host and creator Geoff Keighley says that its success likely means that the show will return next year. He told Polygon, “With the growth this year and all the sponsor support, I feel pretty confident we will be back next December for The Game Awards 2016.” Keighley also mentioned that he believes the show broke even this year.

Twitch and YouTube were named as the top streaming platforms for The Game Awards 2015. One billion impressions were recorded on Twitter using “#TheGameAwards”, which is twice the amount of last year’s social impact. Over 175,000 different people used that hashtag, resulting in roughly 279,000 tweets. Finally, the top streaming channels saw more than half a million comments.

As for what gamers can expect next year, Keighley teased:

“Next year will be about adding other elements around the show. One thing I wanted to do this year was a big eSports tournament the day of the show, but we just didn’t have enough bandwidth to get it done.”

Mercedes-Benz has gone live with a new video featuring Mario to promote its latest collaboration with Nintendo. Give it a look below.

At one point, Nintendo was working on a new Fire Emblem game for the N64. Only a little information about the project was let out before its cancellation.

Now that the Making of Fire Emblem book is out in Japan, fresh details about Fire Emblem 64’s development have emerged. You can find them rounded up below, along with concept art images. All translations come courtesy of Serenes Forest and Reddit’s Microwaveit.

– The foundations of Fire Emblem 64 were used to develop Binding Blade for the GBA
– Fire Emblem 64 was titled “Maiden of Darkness”
– This was also the working title of Binding Blade when it was first unveiled
– Not much was carried over between Fire Emblem 64 and Binding Blade according to an interview with the developers
– In the middle of production for the N64 version of Maiden of Darkness, due to various structural changes, game planning basically had to start over from the beginning
– Roy remained the same
– Almost everything else about the game changed, including story and (almost) all other characters
– Since the target audience for the game became older, they had to recreate their protagonist to appeal to both kids and adults
– Karel was the only character from Maiden of Darkness to get carried over into Blinding Blade
– A character named Idoun also existed in both games, but only the name is consistent
– The appearance, personality, and role in-game are all different
– Concept artwork and a screenshot of Maiden of Darkness shown during Space World 2000 are in this post
– Images show an unnamed male called Taki
– Raigh, Ephraim, Eliwood (Ephraim’s father), Aron, Bors and Owain dialogue is included in the book
– Eliwood, Raigh and Bors are names of characters from Binding Blade, although it’s unclear if they’re the same characters
– Ephraim shares his name with one of the Lords of The Sacred Stones
– Owain was later used as Eudes’s English name in Awakening
– It’s likely they’re different characters, but their names were simply reused
– One of the earliest concept artworks for Roy had his name labelled “Ike”
– Ike was originally known as “Paris”
– This name was later used for his descendant in Awakening (Priam in the English version)

Xbox boss Phil Spencer tends to be very talkative with fans on Twitter. Yesterday, he made some interesting – if not unexpected – comments pertaining to Nintendo.

First, here’s what was said when asked if there will ever be anything from Nintendo on Xbox:

Spencer’s tweets continued by talking about a couple of other topics. First, he mentioned that he’s happy that Microsoft was able to work with Nintendo to get Minecraft on Wii U. Spencer also said that acquiring the rights to GoldenEye 007 has proven difficult, which had prevented a re-release on the Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade in the past.
