Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Thanks to GamesIndustry, we have new insight into the UK gaming market for March 2021.

Switch was actually in last place for consoles, selling less than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. That being said, Switch sales are up 13.6 percent over the first three months of 2020.

Games on Nintendo’s console also performed very well. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the best-selling boxed game of the month, with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Monster Hunter Rise, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also in the top five.

Here’s a look at the best sellers of March:

Update (4/10): Play-Asia is taking pre-orders for the Ring Fit Adventure mat here.

Original (4/7): HORI has made a bunch of Switch accessories over the past few years, most of which are controllers. But now the company has unveiled the first ever accessory for Ring Fit Adventure.

HORI is planning to release an officially-licensed mat for the Switch title which can be used in either a folded form or fully spread depending on the exercise the player is performing. Since it’s absorbing some of the impact of you hitting the floor, it’s easier on your joints. It measures 1,800 mm x 610 mm with a thickness of 4 mm.

The Ring Fit Adventure mat is slated for June in Japan with a price point of 6,300 yen. There’s no word on a western release just yet, though importing is always an option.

Speaking with Nikkei, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about what’s next for Animal Crossing fans.

Furukawa spoke broadly about the company’s viewpoints, and noted that “games must be interesting” given other competition and consumers having only so much free time. Nintendo doesn’t simply want to rest on its laurels, so it wants to continue supporting its well-known franchises while also pursuing “new games and new series.”

Furukawa also brought up hardware and how Nintendo is “constantly thinking about ideas for new consoles”. Although many ideas are difficult to realize, the company invests in resources “in case any of these ideas become feasible in future.”

Our full translation of Furukawa’s comments can be found below.

Sonic Colors

Update: Sonic Colors Ultimate has been listed by French retailer Sogamely. If the retailer is to be believed, it’ll be on Switch and other platforms. The listing does not contain any concrete details and it’s unclear if there’s any correlation to the iksample discovery.

Original: Sonic Colors Remastered is rumored to be the works. That’s after a possible mention for the project was found on the website of iksample, a German dubbing studio. It’s listed with key art for Sonic Boom, though we assume that was a mistake.

According to iksample, the company is involved with localization. The original Sonic Colors did not have a German dub, so SEGA may want to include it in a potential remaster.

We do need to caution that there’s been no official announcement for Sonic Colors Remastered, and it’s always possible that nothing comes to fruition. If this is an actual product though, a Switch release is almost a certainty. Sonic doesn’t miss Nintendo platforms these days, and the original was a Wii exclusive (though the DS did receive a different title of its own).

Borderlands 3

Update (4/9): 2K PR is apparently saying that the rating was an error. If that’s the case, we won’t be seeing Borderlands 3 on Switch – at least for now.

Original (4/8): All of the main Borderlands games have released on Switch – with one notable exception. Borderlands 3, the latest addition to the franchise, is not yet available on the console. However, there’s a possibility of that changing in the future.

Borderlands 3: Director’s Cut has been rated today by PEGI. There’s no official word yet from 2K or Gearbox, though an announcement could be made in the future.

Here’s an overview of Borderlands 3 as well as a trailer:
