This week’s issue of Famitsu has a big feature on HAL Laboratory to celebrate the studio’s 40th anniversary. As part of that, the Japanese magazine spoke with a few key Kirby developers. Lead action programmer Katsuyoshi Sumitomo, general director Shinya Kumazaki, and design director Riki Fuhrmann participated in the discussion.

After talking about how Star Allies raised the bar for Kirby games, the developers discussed their future plans. Fuhrmann’s comments might be the most interesting, as he said he personally wants to create a non-action spin-off title. He also promised “a wide variety of Kirby coming out in the future.”

Below are the full comments from all three developers:

Paper Mario is in a much different place now than where it was when the series first started out on the N64. Nintendo and Intelligent Systems originally made a pure RPG experience. Since though, that’s changed significantly.

After Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, the franchise went in a different direction with Super Paper Mario. The Wii game focused less on RPG mechanics and more on platforming. Things then took another turn with Paper Mario: Sticker Star. The sticker mechanic unfortunately wasn’t well received, and the battles didn’t really have much of an importance. Many of Sticker Stars’ ideas then carried over into Paper Mario: Color Splash… and that’s where things end – at least for now.

Kindred Games has been hosting a Kickstarter campaign over the past month for Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff. Not only was the $22,000 funding target reached, but an overwhelming amount of support from backers helped the team raise almost $80,000, and a Switch stretch goal was met as well.

Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff is an open world RPG. The game ditches traditional gameplay elements like classes and levels, but supports co-op and the world is promised to be full of adventures.
