Mario

The fact that Super Mario Cereal is happening is a sight to behold in and of itself. But the fact that it also acts as an amiibo makes things even more interesting.

The Super Mario Cereal box teases that its sticker can be scanned in Super Mario Odyssey. However, it seems that it doesn’t really do anything that special as an amiibo.

Reddit user ziiigg, who shared the back of the Super Mario Cereal box earlier today, says that it works like most other amiibo in Super Mario Odyssey. That means when you scan the box, it can go look for Power Moons. There is just a slight, neat touch though – players are told that the Super Mario Cereal is a “delicious” amiibo.

Update: Bumped to the top. Back of the cereal box has been added below.

Original: If you needed further confirmation that the new Super Mario Cereal is happening, Kellogg’s has you covered. The company’s UK Twitter account told one consumer that the serial is in fact real. However, based on the wording, it sounds like it may only be sold in the US.

The official tweet is as follows:

It may have initially seemed too crazy to be real, but based on this tweet and the fact that it has started to show up in Target’s inventory system, we should be seeing the Super Mario Cereal soon. Unfortunately, folks outside of the US may have trouble getting their hands on the cereal.

Some rather interesting news surfaced last night about new Super Mario Cereal. It’s rumored that Nintendo and Kellog’s have teamed up to offer the product on store shelves – at least in the US. While some have doubted the validity of the original speculation, new evidence points to the original rumor being real.

Some of you may be aware of BrickSeek, a site that keeps track of inventory of a few different retailers. One of these stores is Target. As it turns out, the Super Mario Cereal already seems to be appearing in Target’s system.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting on a massive agreement that is wrapping up between Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment. According to the publication, the two sides will be teaming up for an animated Super Mario Bros. movie. Illumination Entertainment has produced animated films for Universal Pictures in the past.

The Wall Street Journal says that one sticking point is how Nintendo wants to ensure it will be involved enough in the creative process. Shigeru Miyamoto has apparently been part of the talks and will likely be a producer on the movie, along with Chris Meledandri.

Currently, just one Mario movie is planned, though the agreement could allow for more. If everything goes through, Illumination’s Paris studio Mac Guff will animate the project. Since it’s in early stages of development, don’t expect to see the film for a few years.

The App Store updated today with a news piece about Super Mario Run. The article included some comments from Takashi Tezuka, who has long been working on the Mario series.

Takashi is one of a select few developers who has had a large impact on Mario – others being Shigeru Miyamoto and Toshihiko Nakago.

Tezuka had this to say about their lengthy working relationship:

“If we were a rock band, we’d have disbanded long ago. After working together for 30 years, our sense of what’s good and what’s bad in terms of quality is in sync.”

PowerA has two new specially-designed controllers lined up for Switch. Next month, the new hardware with Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario designs will be released.

Both controllers have been officially licensed by Nintendo. They feature six interchangeable analog caps for custom control, soft-touch rubber grips for added comfort, and a 10-foot removable USB cable.

The two controllers should be out on October 23. Amazon has the Zelda one up for pre-order here, and the Mario edition here.

On its Japanese website, Nintendo has character profiles for various characters in the Mario franchise. One change in particular is earning a great deal of attention.

This is Nintendo’s character description for Mario:

Harvey Atkin passed away this week after losing a battle to cancer. He was 74.

Some of you may be unaware of this, but Atkin played a big role in the Super Mario Bros. cartoons way back in the day. Atkin voiced King Koopa in three different animated shows in the 80’s and 90’s. Interestingly, he was the only one to play the same role in each series. Atkin was involved with The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, and The New Super Mario World series.

Rest in peace, Harvey Atkin.
