Nintendo Switch Online

It has been announced that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers in Japan will be able to try Coffee Takj for free as part of the latest Switch Online Game Trial. Like other Switch Online Game Trials, players who hold a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be able to play the entirety of the game’s content for the duration of the trial, which is scheduled to go live on November 21. Here’s some more information about the game:

Over 36 million people have subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed today. That number was divulged during a financial results briefing.

At this time last year, the subscription total for Nintendo Switch Online was at 32 million.

Furukawa said during the briefing today:

Nintendo Switch Online controllers iOS 16.1

Apple has released a new version 16.1 update for its iOS platform, and interestingly enough, there’s a bit of news for Switch owners.

Nintendo Switch Online classic controllers are now supported. Thus far we have confirmation that the SNES and N64 devices work, though we’re waiting to hear if the news also applies to NES and SEGA Genesis. Right now it’s assumed that all of the Switch Online controllers are compatible.

Original (10/3): The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is once again a featured title for Nintendo Switch Online, with a new set of icons now being made available.

Icons for the game were being offered previously during the summer. However, this time around, it looks like Nintendo has prepared a new set of designs.

Mario Party and Mario Party 2 are appearing on Nintendo Switch Online next month, Nintendo has announced. Both will be available on November 2, 2022 for members of the Expansion Pack tier.

Mario Party launched for the N64 in 1999 (very end of 1998 in Japan) and was the original party-starter for the series. The classic four-player party game has you joining Mario and friends across nine action-packed Adventure Boards and 56 minigames in competition that can be experienced alone or with friends.

Pilotwings 64 is appearing on Switch in less than a week, and GameXplain has now readied a comparison video to show how the graphics compare to the N64 original.

The biggest takeaway here is that on Switch, the game runs at a mostly smooth 60 frames per second. That’s a big step up from the initial release, which largely ran at 30 FPS (some dips, only menus were 60 FPS). Outside of that, the whole package is in proper HD like other N64 titles on Switch Online. The only slight downside is that the in-game timer looks a bit more wonky due to the increased frame rate.

Pilotwings 64 will be added to Nintendo Switch Online as part of the Expansion Pack tier next week, Nintendo has announced. It will be available on October 13, 2022.

Here’s an overview of the game:

Splatoon 3 icons Nintendo Switch Online

Original (9/8): Starting today, Nintendo Switch Online icons can claim new icons based on Splatoon 3. The first batch was just made available and comes just in time for the main game’s launch.

Nintendo is planning several waves of Splatoon 3 icons that will be cycled out on a weekly basis. Expect new batches until October 6. Fans can obtain icons for characters, backgrounds, and frames. Characters cost 10 My Nintendo Platinum Points each while everything else is 5 Platinum Points.

A new update has just released for the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app, bringing it to version 2.3.0.

This update mostly focuses on SplatNet 3 functionality; specifically, it allows the use of widgets for the app, letting you display the battle logs, stage schedule, current gear loadout and/or album directly onto your home screen.

NES icons Switch online

Original (9/5): To kick off the month of September, NES icons have now been added to the Nintendo Switch Online service. They can be redeemed with points on My Nintendo.

Icons are available based on characters – and that’s it. Typically we see backgrounds and frames as well, but there are none of those this time around. At least for wave one, fans can get their hands on icons for Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Tennis, Baseball, Soccer, Volleyball, and Ice Hockey plus consoles and accessories from the era, from both inside and outside Japan. Each one will set you back 10 Platinum Points from My Nintendo.
