Sonic games tend not to sell well in Japan. And so it shouldn’t be shocking to see that the franchise’s latest entry, Sonic Lost World, has completely bombed in its first week. That doesn’t make the game’s performance any less disappointing, though.

Media Create’s latest data revealed that the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World sold 4,919 copies in its first few days of availability in Japan. The Wii U version, however, was nowhere to be seen.

Dengeki has come through with sales of its own courtesy of ASCII Media Works. Despite the fact that Sonic Lost World was the best-selling Wii U game in Japan last week, it managed to sell just 2,076 copies.

2DS sales have risen 64 percent week-on-week in the UK. The boost, in part, is due to a price cut initiated by retailers. Argos, Amazon and Tesco, and others have been offering the 2DS for just under £100. The 2DS alone was the best-selling console in the UK last week, and that’s without counting 3DS/3DS XL sales.

Satoru Iwata

With Nintendo releasing its latest financial results today, president and CEO Satoru Iwata appeared for a press conference to follow up on the company’s performance.

Naturally, the topic of games was something that came up quite often. Iwata stressed the importance of upcoming Wii U titles for the holidays, stating that Nintendo’s performance hinges on the sales of new titles like Super Mario 3D World. After the results are reviewed, Nintendo executives will determine “what the company needs to do, over the long-term, about its platform.”

Iwata said:

EA earned $695 in revenue across console, mobile, and PC software sales during the latest financial quarter. Unsurprisingly, just $9 million of the total came from Wii U and Wii U titles, or 1.3 percent.

If you were to disregard handheld and PC sales, Wii and Wii U’s total increases to 3 percent. Still, that’s nothing compared to the Xbox 360 (54 percent) and PlayStation 3 (42 percent).

Also worth mentioning, handheld sales encompass 14 percent of all EA mobile sales. Sony handhelds take up 8 percent while Nintendo portables account for 6 percent.
