Update (12/11): Bumped to the top. The update is now live in Europe for 3DS digital owners. Additionally, the update is 92MB.

Original (12/10): Shovel Knight’s latest update (version 2.1) which allows for new functionality with amiibo is up and running in Europe on Wii U. It will soon be out on 3DS as well, but Yacht Club Games ran into “a small road bump on the way to finalization.” We’ll have the news here when the update can be downloaded for Nintendo’s portable.

As for North America, Yacht Club Games plans to prepare Shovel Knight’s patch by January 8.

Continue on below for Shovel Knight’s 2.1 update notes. You can also find an instruction manual for amiibo here.

Yacht Club Games has finally shared a concrete release date for the Shovel Knight amiibo.

In Europe, the figure is officially slated for December 11. North America will be receiving the Shovel Knight amiibo on January 8. Pricing is set at $12.99 / £10.99 / €14.99.

Yacht Club Games spoke about the release timing and stock in a website post:

“You may be wondering why the Shovel Knight amiibo is coming out so much earlier in Europe! It was an agonizing decision, as production difficulties forced us to choose between rushing to ship a tiny, insufficient number of amiibo units before Christmas, or ship a good healthy supply of stock to North America just after Christmas. We’ve received hundreds of emails bemoaning the difficulty in finding some of your favorite amiibo, racing for a pre-order window, issues with scalpers, having trouble unlocking the new features you want to play; so, we made the decision to launch the amiibo in January so there would be enough units available. Hopefully, this later date will make buying a Shovel Knight amiibo easy and fair for everyone. So just be sure to save up that Christmas money for the new year!

On that note, if you’re interested in picking up the Shovel Knight amiibo, then we’d like to implore you to wait for it to release in your territory. There will be plenty and it will not be a limited run, so please don’t feel pressured into importing or buying from scalpers. Don’t spend more than the retail price! Also, keep in mind the new Shovel Knight amiibo features will not function on your game system in your territory until the listed release date. Thank you everyone for your patience!”

On Wii U and 3DS, the Shovel Knight amiibo provides these features:

– Level up to a max level of 50 by finding treasure!
– Earn relics in an all new way while uncovering all-new relics, abilities, and powers you never thought possible!
– Customize the look of your Shovel Knight with cool and crazy cosmetic options!
– Use your Custom Knight seamlessly between Nintendo 3DS and Wii U!
– Battle your way through amiibo exclusive challenge stages that take advantage of the new Custom Knight relics and abilities!
– 5 new solo challenges and 5 new co-op challenges (exclusive to Wii U) await!

And below are some details about co-op multiplayer on Wii U:

– Join a friend’s Shovel Knight campaign and shovel together!
– Use your cooperative skills to help each other out along the way!
– Compete against each other collecting gold and defeating enemies to prove who is the true hero of Shovelry!
– Play with any combination: two Custom Knights, one Custom Knight/one Classic Knight, or 2 Classic Knights.

In an official website post, Yacht Club Games shared more information about Shovel Knight’s retail release and upcoming amiibo.

First, the game’s physical version is officially moved to November 3 in North America and October 30 in Europe. Yacht Club Games explained the slight delay and pricing update:

The final few steps of the Plague of Shadows content took a little longer than expected, but it was important to us that this update to be on the disc/cart right out of the box! Unfortunately that meant we had to push back the date just a little a bit. Luckily, all of the teams throughout the various console manufacturing steps have been really helpful in reducing this knock-on delay as much as possible.

In an unexpected turn of events, we’ve had to raise the price of our game to $24.99. Although everyone initially agreed to a $19.99 price point, some retailers ran into trouble with limited space to show off their wares, and the rules in place about where games with certain prices are displayed. We didn’t want our ‘bargain priced’ game to go straight to the bargain bin of obscurity, so we had to raise the price.

However, we didn’t want anyone to feel as if they were getting hoodwinked just because of our retail situation! If you have already pre-ordered Shovel Knight, your retailer should honor the original price!

We’ve been working hard every day to ensure the physical version is a welcome addition to your game library. From box cover to disc to full color instruction manual. Lastly, to make the package even more compelling at its new price, we’ve added even more!

All versions of the physical release will now come with a free soundtrack download. We know this is a bit redundant, as the soundtrack is ‘pay what you want’ online, but this provides a guilt free way to formally obtain the full, high-quality version of the soundtrack for free! Hopefully, it also gets Jake Kaufman’s beautiful soundtrack into more people’s hands for those people who are unaware of Bandcamp!

Unfortunately, there’s still no news as to when the Shovel Knight amiibo will be available, as the team is “still pinning down a final release date.” Yacht Club Games is also “considering” pre-orders.

Steam is the top-performing platform when it comes to Shovel Knight’s audience. However, Nintendo’s platforms are right behind.

During the Gaming Insiders event in San Francisco last week, Nathan Vella shared the breakdown of Shovel Knight’s audience. The game has seen 32 percent of its players on Steam, 30 percent on 3DS, 20 percent on Wii U, 14 percent on Sony platforms, and 4 percent on Xbox.

Vella noted that “Shovel Knight broke the impression that indies don’t sell so well on Nintendo”.

Yacht Club Games has just released a new Shovel Knight patch on Steam and Humble. While this update isn’t out on Wii U and 3DS just yet, the studio has confirmed that it will be reaching all platforms “in due time.”

Head past the break for a breakdown of what you can expect in Shovel Knight’s latest version.

The Plague of Shadows update for file size is now available. On Wii U, the patch weighs in at a little under 100MB.

The 3DS version is slightly different. You’ll need 715 blocks of free space, but that’s from the entire game. Yacht Club Games has brought the overall size down from 1,217 blocks.

Note that on 3DS, you’ll want to grab the update from the 3DS eShop. Don’t use the in-game menu!
