Super Mario RPG post-game boss rematches

Super Mario RPG will feature post-game boss rematches, Nintendo announced during today’s Nintendo Direct. This is a new feature for the remake in which players can take on bosses again after beating the game, though they’ll be tougher the second time around.

Here’s the latest on Super Mario RPG:

Super Mario RPG graphics comparison

Super Mario RPG will be returning later this year with a remake fit for the game’s well-regarded reputation, and a new comparison video shows how much the graphics have been updated. GameXplain put together a video showing the Switch and SNES versions side by side.

Super Mario RPG seems to have new cutscenes, but that doesn’t mean the actual gameplay has been left by the wayside. There are plenty of improvements on that front as well, from completely redone character models to full environment overhauls. Super Mario RPG did come out on the SNES close to thirty years ago, so this sort of evolution is to be expected.

Nintendo has passed along a bunch of screenshots from Super Mario RPG, and we have the boxart as well. The announcement was made during a Nintendo Direct presentation today.

Super Mario RPG composer Yoko Shimomura

Super Mario RPG is finally back after many years with a new Switch remake, and Yoko Shimomura has now confirmed her involvement. Shimomura was the original composer of the SNES RPG.

If you saw today’s trailer, you may have noticed that Super Mario RPG features updated music on Switch. Shimomura confirmed that she’s in charge of arranging all of the songs.

Super Mario RPG

After nearly three decades, Super Mario RPG is finally making a return. Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed that a remake is in the works for Switch. A release is planned for November 17, 2023.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars originally made it to the SNES in 1996. It did come to the Virtual Console on Wii and Wii U, but it was not added to the Nintendo Switch Online service.

Speculation about Super Mario RPG possibly making a comeback were abound this week following rumors from someone who seemed to have early knowledge about this week’s Nintendo Direct.

Chihiro Fujioka, the director of Super Mario RPG, has expressed interest in making Super Mario RPG 2 that would close out his career.

Fujioka has worked on many different titles going back to the early 80s. That includes several entries in the Mario & Luigi at AlphaDream – a studio which he co-founded, though he left the studio in 2015 and it closed in 2019 after filing for bankruptcy.

Geno

Geno is joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, though perhaps not in the way fans had hoped. Rather than a fighter, he’s being added to the game as a Mii Fighter costume. It follows the trend set in the previous Smash Bros. entry.

Having Geno represented is still notable, and Super Mario RPG character designer Kazuyuki Kurashima is celebrating the news with concept art originally created for the title so many years ago. You can find the full set below.

Beta footage has appeared for two notable Nintendo games. Game Catalogue 2, a ’90s Japanese video game show hosted by Famitsu, featured Super Mario 64 and Super Mario RPG prior to their release. Recordings of both episodes have now popped up online.

For Super Mario 64, we’re able to see a few interesting things. First, Cool Cool Mountain’s portrait is just a generic snow-capped mountain. Other than that, the footage shows placeholder voices for Mario.
