Video of Nintendo’s 3DS takeover on the Southwest airlines flight

Last Wednesday, Nintendo surprised a Southwest airlines flight with a special event. All passengers were given a New 3DS XL and a digital copy of Super Mario Maker for 3DS. Mario was also waiting to welcome everyone at the gate when the flight landed.

Original advertisement for the NES found on eBay

After a reported five years of searching, the first advertisement for what would become the Nintendo Entertainment System has been located.
Hidden a few pages into a 1984 issue of Consumer Electionics is the first advertisement for the NES, in the form of a prototype known as the Advanced Video System, or AVS. Found by archivist Frank Cifaldi on eBay, he parted with a measly $6.99 for what he considered an “extremely lucky” find.

Third Yo-kai Watch movie tops Japanese box office and beats Rogue One

The third Yo-kai Watch movie, known as Eiga Yo-kai Watch: Sora Tobu Kujira to Double no Sekai no Daib?ken da Nyan! (Yo-kai Watch The Movie: The Flying Whale and the Grand Adventure of the Double Worlds, Meow!), premiered in Japan this past weekend. It managed to top the Japanese box office, beating out Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – which also opened a day earlier. We should note however that Yo-kai Watch’s box office earnings for the Saturday – Sunday time period did not overcome Star Wars.
The new Yo-kai Watch film sold 545,211 tickets for 608,033,100 yen (roughly $5.189 million) on 415 screens on Saturday and Sunday. That amount encompasses 57.5 percent of the opening weekend box office for the previous Yo-kai Watch movie, which went on to earn 5.53 billion yen (roughly $47 million).

A holiday message from Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata – 2016 edition

You may recall that Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata delivered a holiday message to close out 2015. Today, he’s done something similar for 2016.
Shibata recaps the year that was Nintendo. The likes of Pokemon GO, the NES Classic Edition, and even Mario at the Olympics were all mentioned.

I would like to thank you all for once again giving Nintendo your support over the past year.
For me personally, it has been even more exciting working at Nintendo than usual!
The first highlight was the launch of YO-KAI WATCH, which was well received in Europe and enjoyed by many people. I was happy to be able to make you all smile with my Yo-kai dance, which I practised for three days before the Nintendo Direct.

Unlocked: The World of Games, Revealed is a new documentary series that explores the world of video games. The new show just went live this week, and one of the episodes features Nintendo quite a bit.
Two prominent Nintendo executives spoke about the topic of competition during their segments. At one point, Nintendo of America executive vice president of operations Don James was asked about the biggest challenge the company has had to deal with. That’s what led him to mention competition. While competition can be “fierce”, James believes that Nintendo franchises act like a “secret weapon”.

Paper Mario: Color Splash producer on lack of returning NPCs, new game would feature “a different system”

Paper Mario’s first two games featured many original characters and party members with original abilities. However, since then, the series has been moving away from that. It is especially evident in Color Splash, as many of the characters encountered are Toads.
Game Informer spoke with Kensuke Tanabe, the Wii U title’s producer, in this month’s issue. The magazine started out by asking why old NPCs from the early Paper Mario games haven’t returned. Tanabe replied with the following:

Hyrule Encyclopedia revealed as second Zelda 30th anniversary book

The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts was created to celebrate Zelda’s 30th anniversary. But there are actually two other books planned to celebrate the big event.
Hyrule Encyclopedia has been revealed as the second entry in the Zelda 30th anniversary book series. The first chapter is a visual encyclopedia, and will explain keywords like the Master Sword and Hyrule Kingdom with various images. As for the second chapter, it’s a database with a list of enemies, items, dungeons, and more. The third chapter will contain archives, and will give explanatory notes and storylines of each game.
Japan is receiving The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Encyclopedia in February. The western version should follow later in 2017.

Get 10 Platinum Points on My Nintendo by popping a balloon on the homepage

My Nintendo displays a variety of Mii animations on its homepage. These are shown at random, and include things like your character playing a 3DS.
One of these animations can actually net you a few extra coins. Described as a “secret mission”, if you pop the relevant balloon, you’ll earn 10 Platinum Points. It should be clearly visible since you’ll see the middle balloon has a Platinum coin tied to it.
Refresh My Nintendo’s homepage, and you should find the Platinum Points balloon soon enough.

Each playable character will have their own target micro-game in Runner3

Choice Provisions is looking to mix things up with micro-games in Runner3. In the series’ upcoming third entry, all playable characters will have their own original target micro-game.
Choice Provisions talked about the challenges in implementing the feature through a blog post:
“The biggest challenge here is to keep the micro-game as simple as it was in Runner2 for each character’s variation while at the same time making them all distinct from one another.
In game design, one often has to work within constraints, but when the constraints are so simplistic, as in this cannon micro-game, and you have to make so many variations, the constraints can feel overly restrictive.
