It was due to Natsume’s relationship with Arc System Works that River City: Tokyo Rumble was able to head west. That game originally came to Japan a few years ago, but Natsume was finally able to publish it in English at the end of last month.

Speaking about the partnership with Arc System Works and how River City: Tokyo Rumble came to be overseas, Natsu,e producer Taka Maekawa told Siliconera:

“Our partnership with Arc System Works started almost a year and a half ago through a good friend of mine in Japan. It all started with Gotcha Racing and Brave Tank Hero for the Nintendo 3DS, then continued with Super Strike Beach Volleyball and River City: Tokyo Rumble this year. With River City, I contacted Arc System Works as soon as I saw the news that Million’s title rights (who were the right holders of Tecnos Japan titles) had been transferred to Arc System Works.”

Siliconera also asked if Natsume would be open to localizing more River City games, such as the medieval spinoff for 3DS and River City Ransom SP. To this, Maekawa said:

“Of course! We are definitely open for any opportunities with other titles in the Kunio series!”

Since the inception of Dark Souls, FromSoftware’s series has often drawn comparisons to The Legend of Zelda. But Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the former franchise, doesn’t feel it’s worthy of the analogy.

Speaking with Rolling Stones, Miyazaki said that Zelda and Dark Souls “are different games belonging to different genres” while also adding that “they’re guided by different concepts of game design.” He also feels that the only similarities may lie in how “Zelda became a sort of textbook for 3D action games.”

As for his own personal thoughts of Zelda, Miyazaki said that it’s “truly monumental”.

Miyazaki’s full comments:

“When I was a student, The Legend of Zelda was truly monumental, so to be perfectly honest, I feel deeply unworthy of the comparison. The Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls are different games belonging to different genres though, and they’re guided by different concepts of game design. They don’t need to aspire to the same ideals. If there are similarities, they probably stem from the fact that The Legend of Zelda became a sort of textbook for 3D action games.”

This past weekend, it was thought that Super Mario Bros. speedrunner Kosmic had set a new world record for the classic 1985 game. The community thought that he had managed to secure the record by a single frame, beating out the previous holder Darbian. However, we later found out that some lag resulted in the record being tied, not broken.

Kosmic has now posted a new time of 4:57.194. This would mean that he’s beaten the record by three frames, or 0.05 seconds. With no lag frame present, it does appear that the record has actually been set this time.

Have a look at Kosmic’s new run below.

This past weekend, Nintendo hosted a special 30th anniversary Zelda concert in Kyoto, Japan. It was a big event as key staff involved with the series were present – Shigeru Miyamoto, Eiji Aonuma, Takashi Tezuka, and Koji Kondo. Famitsu shared an in-depth report of what occurred and what was said.

Voice actress Ruriko Aoki hosted the concert. She was actually planning on buying a ticket for the event in Nagoya, and even asked her agency to free up her schedule. However, she was eventually told that she got the job for this concert. Series producer Eiji Aonuma also appeared and introduced Aoki. The two showed up together during a Niconico Majora’s Mask 3D live stream last year, and since she’s a big fan of Zelda, he asked her to be the MC.

Darkrai was revealed – and subsequently released – as a new character in the arcade version of Pokken Tournament during the summer. Bandai Namco is now teasing the announcement of another fighter. On October 13, we’ll be hearing something about the latest roster addition.

We do want to stress that this news only pertains to Pokken Tournament in the arcades for the time being. Even though Darkrai was spotted in update files on Wii U, that Pokemon still hasn’t been made available in the console version. That doesn’t necessarily mean that Darkrai and this other new mystery character have been ruled out for Wii U – we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Earlier today, Dylan Cuthbert held a Reddit AMA. Cuthbert worked on the original Star Fox as well as the cancelled Star Fox 2. Unsurprisingly, he answered a few questions relating to the franchise.

Head past the break for Cuthbert’s comments on Star Fox 2 as well as his opinion of Star Fox Zero. He also gave a brief comment as to whether anything was scrapped from the first Star Fox.

A new commercial has started airing to promote Jakks Pacific’s line of Nintendo figures. Get a look at the brief video below.

Update (10/2): Kotaku now reports that Kosmic’s time was off by a single frame, so he’s actually tied the record rather than breaking it. As he explained:

“Basically we know the exact time of the run by the pattern bowser does. His patterns change every frame from power on, so the pattern he gave me is the pattern for 4:57.227.

But, I got a frame of lag when I did [the] bullet bill glitch in 8-2, and lag isn’t like an official frame that the game keeps track of, so Bowser’s pattern isn’t affected by this.

8-4 was 1 frame faster but 8-2 was 1 frame slower so it’s an exact tie.”

Original (10/1): The previous world record for Super Mario Bros. was 4:57.244. However, this past week, Kosmic was able to overcome that time by a single frame. He now has the world record of 4:57.227 – just a difference of .017, seconds.

Here’s a look at Kosmic’s run:
