Capcom showed a new trailer for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in a Japanese Nintendo Direct held last month. The video showed a new feature in which Felyne companions can launch hunters up into the air to attack monsters.

Director Kaname Fujioka has since explained how it works. He told Siliconera:

“The way the system with the Felynes works is quite different from what we had in [Monster Hunter 3]. When you bring your Felyne companions along with you in 4, they have stats, just like any other character would.”

“And what happens is, when you have other players who bring their own Felynes along, depending on how the stats match up, they’ll end up performing different things to help you out. They can lay traps, they can notify you when enemies are in a weakened state. It depends on what kind of Felynes you have, and how they combine with the other ones during the quest.”

“One of the new things we added specifically for 4 Ultimate over 4 is that, one of the things these Felynes can do now is launch the player up into the air. And that does behave essentially the same way as a jump attack. Same damage, same animation. It allows you to do it in places you couldn’t normally perform a jumping attack.”

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson managed to sell 46,494 units in its first week on the Japanese market. Unfortunately for Marvelous, that’s the lowest debut for any Senran Kagura game and it’s about half of what Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus did at launch. Deep Crimson also sold through only 49.13 percent of its initial shipment while Shinovi Versus, the series’ last entry, sold 94,324 copies at launch with a 93.37% sell-through rate.

Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 also hit Japan last week, but the game performed quite a bit better. It had a low sell-through rate (42.89 percent) like Senran Kagura 2, but the game moved 81,584 copies. The title is currently on track with Ultimate Mission 1, which sold 88,386 copies in its first week and went on to sell 290,000 copies.

Natsume is continuing its series of developer diaries for Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley, and has revealed new details.

First, producer Taka Maekawa discusses how caring for and raising animals will work:

“While we were first developing Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley, we called it by a code name: Back to Basics. We’ve applied this philosophy to many aspects of the game, including the animals available on the farm. We went back to the basics: cows, sheep, chickens, and, of course, horses.”

You can find a whole bunch of animal details below, and a few art pieces above.

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is getting a patch in Japan next week. According to a tweet from producer Kenichiro Takaki, the team is addressing bugs and the game’s balance. Version 1.1 should be out this month if everything goes well.

Sakurai gives us a look at more UI today, this time pertaining to the 3DS only Smash Run mode:

He continues:

If you hit the X Button, it will randomly fill up the remaining weight allowance with powers. You can keep changing the line-up as many times as you please. The level of a power is proportional to its strength, number of uses, and weight. Organizing them might be easier if you label your favorite powers with a ?.

Famitsu recently published an interview with Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir producer and director Shigeo Komori.

First, here’s what Komori said about changes from the previous game:

“Our thought was to make an Etrian Odyssey game that focuses on the characters and story that many people can enjoy, and that development concept principle has not changed. Also, the subtitle of the game, ‘The Knight of Fafnir’ is about the protagonist.”

“Last time it was the subtitle of ‘The Millennium Girl,’ which revolved around the heroine’s story. However, this time it will be about the player’s role as the protagonist, and how his friends overcome obstacles in the fantasy RPG you’ll get to enjoy.”

Komori also shared the following details:

– “Fafnir” is the name of the protagonist’s power that allows him to transform
– Komori states that it will completely transform his appearance while giving him a big boost in stats
– It also brings about a variety of different skills he can use
– Using this transformation ability can easily change the tides in battle
– It’ll also have its limits
– The heroine Arianna is of the “Princess” class
– The game’s character designer Yuji Himukai put quite the effort into her design
– Himukai included roughly 20 different expressions for all the other characters
– Arianna will have over 50 different expressions in the game
– There will also be animated scenes and voice acting like Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl
– There’s about twice the volume of voice-acting
– New still-frame event styles
– Supports up to 8 save slots
