Wii U

Unsurprisingly, Activision intends to publish a new Skylanders game this year. What’s interesting though is that Toys for Bob has returned as the project’s primary developer.

Toys for Bob worked on Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and Skylanders Giants, but wasn’t too involved with 2013’s Skylanders Swap Force. Vicarious Visions was put in charge of last year’s title, with Beenox handling the Wii version.

Polygon has published a new feature with additional details about Sonic Boom, as well as commentary from Sonic game designer Takashi Iizuka, Sega of America producer Stephen Frost, and Big Red Button’s Bob Rafei. You can find a roundup of what was shared below. You can also find Polygon’s full piece here.

More: ,

Since Skylanders made its debut, the series has grossed over $2 billion worldwide for Activision. That figure is as of December 31 of last year. According to Activision, roughly 175 million Skylanders toys have also been sold.

So this is a bit unexpected. We’ve seen Sonic Boom before, even though we didn’t know it. The game’s environments were showcased as part of a CryEngine 3 GDC 2013 video, which went live last March. I don’t think many would have predicted that Big Red Button was giving a look at its new Sonic game at the time!

Thanks to Tytygh for the tip.

Sonic Boom doesn’t sound like it’s been put together sloppily. On its website, Big Red Button Entertainment states that the Wii U title has been in the works for two years.

The message in full:

For more than two decades, Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the world’s biggest gaming icons, with over 70 video game titles, four animated series, and an extensive global merchandising line to his name. This year, SEGA is excited to introduce a new branch of the Sonic universe, entitled Sonic Boom, that will debut a new look for Sonic and friends and launch their first-ever CG animated television series, new video games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and a new toy line. The creative driving forces behind these projects are working together with SEGA to kick-start a global campaign for Sonic Boom that will excite and engage new and existing fans across a variety of platforms.

Sonic Boom’s visual identity includes character designs inspired by the abilities and unique personalities of each of the characters, while still maintaining the core identity and values of the Sonic brand. The rich worlds of the TV series and videogame will share a common narrative and a number of location and stylistic similarities reflecting full collaboration between videogame, TV series partners and SEGA from the outset.
