In a recent interview, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said these two titles “are going in different directions”. He brought up how Mario Kart World is featuring an open world. Iizuka ultimately feels “the design itself is fundamentally different.”

He told VGC in the interview:

Nintendo’s latest maintenance schedule for the week of June 8, 2025 is now available.

There’s just one session planned for Nintendo Switch Online, and interestingly, it’s one of the shortest windows we’ve ever seen. Still, this counts as the first “downtime” during the Nintendo Switch 2 era.

In a recruitment post on Nintendo’s website, developer Daigo Shimizu spoke about what it was like working on the UI for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the and Tears of the Kingdom.

Shimizu spoke about how starting with Breath of the Wild, the team opted for “a more streamlined approach.” That means removing clutter and focusing on what was truly necessary. If you’ve played either Nintendo Switch title, you may have noticed that there isn’t a ton happening on screen aside from the actual game world.

The idea of practicality and ‘happiness’ was something brought up for the loading screens. Breath of the Wild featured tips, but Tears of the Kingdom showed the map to get players excited about exploration. Along the same lines, the theme of ‘happiness’ was used for cooking and specifically the Recipe Book in Tears of the Kingdom as the team felt “people feel happy by looking at restaurant menus or pictures of food”.

The launch of a new gaming system is always an exciting time. These days, it’s even more exciting in the world of Nintendo. In the past we’d see a new Nintendo device every few years – it’d be split between the release of handheld and home console. But because those two things are now combined, the wait for Nintendo hardware is longer than ever before. Now after more than eight years, Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here.

Nintendo was clearly looking to build on what worked so well the last time around. That means we again have a system that can be played either on the TV or on the go. Still, the added power is certainly welcome, and there are some new features such as mouse support and GameChat functionality.

If you picked up a Nintendo Switch 2 this week, how are you feeling about it so far? What are your first impressions? Which games have you played? Let us know in the comments.
