We haven’t heard much about Mario Sports Superstars since its announcement during the September Nintendo Direct. However, a few details were included in this month’s Game Informer, and now we know even more about the game. Nintendo put up a fact sheet on its website which goes a bit more in-depth.

The first thing mentioned is that you’ll be able to “hone skills in training”. In other words, a training mode should be included. The same paragraph also mentions that you can “pick Mario, Waluigi, or one of sixteen others”, meaning there should be 18 playable characters.

Moving onto the sports themselves, we have actual information as to how the horse racing will play out. You’ll build a stable of horses, then train them before moving on to actual races. In-field shifts will be a part of baseball while soccer will let you change your team’s formation.

Continue on below for the full fact sheet.

Game Informer previewed Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World this month, providing some new details in the process. The magazine also put out a one-page preview on Mario Sports Superstars. We now have a little bit of extra information on this game as well.

In case you haven’t heard, Mario Sports Superstars features five different sports: soccer, baseball, tennis golf, and the surprise inclusion of horse racing. Game Informer notes that single matches and tournaments can be played. You start out by choosing a couple of captains comprised of the bigger characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser. The rest of the team is then filled in with less prominent characters like Goombas, Magikoopas, and different costumed Toads.

Arcade elements will naturally be a part of the Mario Sports Superstars experience. Game Informer mentions special moves and abilities. The magazine also says that when pitching in baseball, it’s timing-based.

That was mostly it. Not quite as much here compared to Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World, but some extra tidbits. Since these previews are starting to appear, maybe we’ll see more hands-on impressions (and hopefully footage) from other outlets soon.

According to Australian ratings, Mario Sports Superstars is being co-developed by Bandai Namco. It is unknown how much they are helping develop the game. Thanks to Jonathan for the heads up!

Five sports are included in Mario Sports Superstars. Players will be able to take on baseball, tennis, golf, horse racing, and soccer.

We now know that Camelot is handling tennis and golf. As for the rest? Nintendo might be working on baseball, horse racing, and soccer internally.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash sold fairly well in Japan. Media Create has first week sales at 55,331 units while Dengeki’s figure is slightly higher at 58,000. In any case, that’s probably more than most people were anticipating.

According to Dengeki, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash sold through about 80 percent of its initial shipment. The title sold favorably compared to the last console release in the series, New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis. That one sold 57,000 copies in its first week, and went on to move 247,000 units in total.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash finally launched in Japan last week. To celebrate, Famitsu spoke with a few developers who worked on the game. The lineup includes director Shugo Takahashi and producer Hiroyuki Takahashi from Camelot as well as Nintendo producer Toshiharu Izuno.

Our complete translation of the interview can be found after the break. The staff touched on topics like approaching HD development for the first time, how new characters were selected, amiibo integration, and online play. There’s also an interesting bit about how Nintendo was initially opposed to including Boo in Mario Tennis 64.

A special episode of Game Center DX featuring Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash has just been uploaded to Nintendo’s Japanese YouTube page. You can view it below.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash launched a couple of months ago in the west, but Japan is finally getting the game next week. View a few commercials below.

If you picked up Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash yesterday, you may have noticed that an update for the game could be downloaded. Nintendo brought out version 1.0.1 in time for its launch. It doesn’t do too much though, as the Big N says of the patch: “Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.”
