Super Bomberman R is the latest entry in the long-running Bomberman franchise. Something we haven’t heard Konami discuss is the game’s name. Surely the “R” means something, right?

Apparently so. Super Bomberman R received a rating from PEGI, which seems to reveal the full name. Based on the classification, the “R” stands for “Rangers”.

That does actually make sense. In the game’s Story Mode, eight Bomberman Rangers are tasked with defeating Evil Emperor Buggler and five Bombers. Super Bomberman R’s title ties into that.

Thanks to Tom for the tip.

Konami brought out a significant Super Bomberman R patch this week. Once applied, you’ll see that the game has been bumped up to version 1.2.

The patch makes notable improvements to the controls. Along with fixing the inputs, Konami made it so online lag is reduced.

The full patch notes have now been published on the official website. Continue on below to read them in full.

Super Bomberman R’s first big update is live. The game has been bumped up to version 1.2.

As detailed earlier today, the patch makes improvements to the gameplay, control input, and character controls. This applies to both online and offline battles.

Konami has promised to further update Super Bomberman R in the future to improve the game’s “play experience.”

Konami has been keeping Super Bomberman R players informed about an update being prepared for the game. We’re now hearing that it should be out very soon.

On the Japanese website, it’s mentioned that the update is coming tomorrow at roughly 10 AM. We’re not sure if this applies to North America and Europe as well, but regardless, expect the patch soon.

Here’s the latest notice about what’s being addressed with the update:

Super Bomberman R didn’t set the sales charts on fire when it debuted in Japan last week, but it still managed to do fairly well. Even though it only sold around 37,000 copies, it was the best-selling third-party game on Switch.

Looking into Super Bomberman R’s sales further reveals an interesting fact. It actually had the best opening week for the series in nearly twenty years. It’s also one of the best openings for the series as a whole.

Here’s a look at previous first week sales for Bomberman games in Japan:

Some Super Bomberman R players have been experiencing issues with control lag, leading to even bigger problems when playing with others locally and online. Thankfully, Konami intends to address the situation.

A notice posted to the Super Bomberman R website states that Konami’s “first priority is to adjust control response times which will improve both the online experience and control lag during offline battles.” An update is being prepared, and a date for its arrival will be shared “very soon.”

Other than that, additional updates are coming “to continuously improve the experience for players, both online and offline.”

Super Bomberman R sees the return of a series that’s been dormant for nearly a decade, this time returning exclusively on Switch. Bomberman has a long and illustrious history thanks to its simple gameplay and arcade-like presentation that makes it easy for anyone to jump in at any time and have fun, regardless of skill level or familiarity with the series or the medium in general. Super Bomberman R, however, for all its worth lacks quite a bit for its price of entry, and while the fun and arcade feeling is still there, don’t expect to feel fulfilled by the end of it all – especially if you’re playing solo.

Some new Super Bomberman R footage is on YouTube now, showing off a bit of 4 player multiplayer. You can check it out below.
