Reggie Fils-Aime

Last month, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime stopped by Cornell for a special interview and Q&A with people in attendance. Reggie touched on several topics during the event, and also revealed that he’s working on a new book. As for what was discussed, he spoke about his close relationship with the late Satoru Iwata, his feelings concerning E3, Nintendo Directs, Mario ROM hacks, and more.

Theorymon attended the event and was kind enough to share a summary. We’ve rounded up those tidbits regarding the significant topics below.

Update: Added brief comment from Reggie below.

Original: GameStop announced today that former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has been appointed as one of three new independent members to its Board of Directors. His role will go into effect on April 20. William “Bill” Simon and James “J.K.” Symancyk have also joined on.

GameStop noted in the press release that the appointments of these three members “are the result of a comprehensive search process led by the Board of Directors and involving shareholder input.” Dan DeMatteo, Gerald Szczepanski, Larry Zilavy, Steve Koonin, Jerome Davis, and Tom Kelly are retiring from the board.

George Sherman, GameStop’s CEO, said of today’s news:

Prior to joining the company, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime already had a lot of love for the Big N. He’s previously mentioned Zelda: A Link to the Past as one of his favorite games and owned a ton of titles for the SNES. Reggie’s personal interest continued into the N64 era, but things lapsed a bit after that.

Speaking during the Present Value podcast, Reggie mentioned that when he was interviewing with Nintendo, he didn’t actually own a GameCube. That’s despite the fact that he owned consoles from the competition – the PS2 and Xbox.

Here’s the full excerpt from the podcast:

Nintendo has always been a big supporter of The Game Awards. Going back to the show’s debut, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime attended every single year and the company was represented on the advisory board. It’s also been home to big announcements like Bayonetta 3, Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and more.

In a recent Reddit AMA, The Game Awards creator and producer Geoff Keighley spoke further about Nintendo’s backing. Keighley revealed that late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata personally told him that the Big N would always be sure to support the show, which meant a lot to him. Keighley noted that The Game Awards wouldn’t be what it is without Iwata and Reggie.

Reggie Fils-Aime recently appeared on the Present Value podcast. The former Nintendo of America president discussed his time at the Big N in-depth, and at one point, was asked about what companies need to think about when building a brand.

Reggie spoke about Nintendo becoming a powerhouse in the gaming industry and how it was a team effort – specifically a “high-functioning, strong leadership team that disagreed in private but was aligned in public and drove the business forward.” He also discussed an experience he had in which Nintendo of America was taking the company’s well-known logo in different directions to try and appeal to an older demographic. This is when he was first starting out. However, Reggie realized that in order to appeal to a mainstream audience, they needed “to do it based on what the brand stood for, and not doing it in some false way.”

Reggie’s full words:

Fans have always embraced former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. There are many reasons for that, but memorable quotes, moment, and memes certainly plays a part of that.

During a recent episode of the Present Value podcast, Reggie weighed in on what becoming a meme means to him. Here’s what he shared on that front:

What will be a big aspect of gaming in the future? If you were to ask former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, it would be streaming.

Reggie told Hollywood Reporter that streaming could take off over the next decade. Players will be able to experience any game on any device thanks to advances with the cloud and increase in download speeds.

Reggie Fils-Aime may have retired from Nintendo, but he’s still an important figure in the gaming industry. Having said that, it’s been confirmed that the former Nintendo of America president will be appearing at the show later this week.

Specifics regarding Reggie’s appearance haven’t been shared. It looks like he’ll be presenting an award, but perhaps something else could be in store as well. Fortunately, we’re just a few days away from The Game Awards 2019 as the big event will be held on December 12.

The Game Awards 2018 opened in a pretty neat way. Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime, along with Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden and Xbox boss Phil Spencer, appeared together on stage for a short speech. Reggie and Layden have since retired/left their respective companies, but it was a great way to show solidarity within the gaming community.

During a Reddit AMA this week, The Game Awards creator and host Geoff Keighley spoke about how that moment came together. Keighley said it took “months of negotiations to make it happen” and he actually “thought it had fallen apart” just a few days before the show aired. Thankfully, it all came back together in the end.

Keighley said:

GameDaily recently caught up with former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. Reggie retired from the company earlier this year after more than fifteen years with the company.

Reggie had some interesting things to say during the interview, and spoke about his decision to retire, his relationship with the late Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata, and how the company wanted to shake up the industry with Wii and DS rather than going with “more horsepower and more accurate visual representation.”
