Star Ocean: First Departure R is coming west, Square Enix has confirmed. The HD remaster of the classic sci-fi RPG will launch digitally for Switch on December 5 – the same day as Japan.

Star Ocean: First Departure R is coming to Switch in Japan on December 5, Square Enix announced today.

Some new features have also been detailed. Square Enix is including a double speed option for field movement and new voice recordings featuring the cast from the original Super Famicom version. Players can switch back to the original First Departure voices as well. While new character designs will be available, it’s also possible to go back to the original art.

Back in May, Square Enix announced Star Ocean: First Departure R, an HD remaster of Star Ocean: First Departure, which itself was a remake of the very first Star Ocean game. Ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2019, where the game will be featured, Square Enix published the first four screenshots of the game, as well as a little description on their TGS site (credit goes to Gematsu for the translation):

The 2007-released remake of Star OceanStar Ocean: First Departure—appears as a high-definition port with new features! In addition to the high-definition upgrade, the game is fully voiced through new recordings by the original Star Ocean cast. The character illustrations have also been redrawn based on the original designs, which you can switch between with the original remake illustrations.

Square Enix has opened up an official teaser site for their recently announced title Star Ocean: First Departure R.

No other new details have been shared on the site, however. Those interested can view the site here.

Star Ocean: First Departure R is coming to Switch, Square Enix has announced. A release date has not yet been confirmed.

Star Ocean: First Departure originally hit the PSP back in 2007. The RPG was a remake of the series’ very first entry, featuring new characters and endings, a remastered soundtrack, new voice characters, and more. Star Ocean: First Departure R will be an HD version of that PSP edition.
