Mario Tennis Aces

Nintendo announced its lineup for the MCM London Comic Con today. A few notable titles will be playable, including Mario Tennis Aces and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on 3DS.

The full lineup is as follows:

Earlier in the year, the Norwegian Consumer Council called out Nintendo for its eShop policies. Currently, it’s impossible to cancel pre-orders at any point before launch.

Despite asking Nintendo to change its ways and comply with the rules, the NCC says nothing has happened. A formal complaint is now being filed against Nintendo as well as a few other gaming companies. The company is said to be going against the 2011 Consumer Rights Directive that grants “a higher level of protection for consumers … in their own country or elsewhere in the EU.”

NCC’s Finn Lützow-Holm Myrstad stated that breaching Norwegian and European consumer contracts “shows a lack of clarity”.

Giles Goddard is one of the very few non-Japanese people who have worked at Nintendo’s Japanese headquarter. He’s probably most famous for working on games like Star Fox and Stunt Race FX with fellow Brit Dylan Cuthbert with their company Argonaut Software. Eurogamer just published an interview with Goddard on what it was like working for and at Nintendo in the 90s. Make sure to read the full interview here; below are a couple of interesting excerpts:

On Nintendo’s corporate culture at the time:

This information comes from Nintendo’s Tatsumi Kimishima…

During the fiscal year ending March 2019, we plan to drive results by positioning Nintendo Switch, which is expanding its installed base, at the core of our business, as well as through the continuation of the Nintendo 3DS business, and by expanding the scale of our smart-device business. We will also move forward with our goal of expanding the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP.

And finally, the video game tradeshow E3 will be held in Los Angeles this June. Again this year, Nintendo will not be hosting a large-scale press conference for institutional investors, analysts and the media. Instead, we plan to continue our practice from the past few years of utilizing a video presentation to introduce the games that are
planned for release during the year.

Another interesting Nintendo patent surfaced this week. On Wednesday, the company filed an application for a “non-limiting example game apparatus” involving a “card display screen including an image of a card object” displayed on the apparatus’ screen.

What the patent boils down to is a digital card format, perhaps for something Pokemon-related. Here’s one excerpt from the application:

Shuntaro Furukawa is taking over for Tatsumi Kimishima as global president of Nintendo in June. At a news conference, Kimishima spoke more about stepping down as well as having Furukawa assuming his previous role.

Kimishima said he made his decision since he “fulfilled almost fully his responsibilities” to turn around Nintendo. He also noted that it was becoming difficult for him to fly around due to his age, and the better-than-expected sales momentum of the Switch sparked the idea to bring in someone else for the president’s position.

Takashi Tezuka

There’s one more notable appointment stemming from the financial report Nintendo published today. Going forward, Takashi Tezuka will be an Executive Officer on Nintendo’s board of directors.

Tezuka joined Nintendo in 1984 and has been key in many classics. He was the director of early hits like Super Mario World and Zelda: A Link to the Past, and has continued to be involved with development through today.

Despite being an Executive Officer, Tezuka will still be a Senior Officer in Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning & Development division.

Nintendo announced today that its current president Tatsumi Kimishima would be succeeded by Shuntaro Furukawa in June. Bloomberg was able to get a few statements from Furukawa at the press conference in Osaka where the news was announced. He had the following to say about his plans as president:

Nintendo announced a smattering of executive changes today. The big one is Tatsumi Kimishima is stepping down as president, to be replaced by Shuntaro Furukawa. Satoru Shibata will also leave the role of Nintendo of Europe’s president in favor of becoming a director.

Elsewhere, Shinya Takahashi is becoming a Managing Executive Officer. He had previously held the role of General Manager of Entertainment Planning & Development Division.

Yoshiaki Koizumi is a Deputy General Manager of Entertainment Planning & Development Division. However, he will be shifting to an Executive Officer role on the board of directors.

The news about Tatsumi Kimishima retiring from Nintendo as president isn’t the only big role change announced for the company today. Satoru Shibata, who has been the president of Nintendo of Europe, is also relocating from his role.

Nintendo confirms that Shibata is becoming a director. In a sense, this is an upgrade, as he’ll have a greater executive officer role as part of the board of directors.

It is not immediately clear who will be taking over for Shibata’s previously role.
