Mega Man Battle Network began as a horror game
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News | 2 Comments
Inside-Games chatted with some staff who worked on Mega Man Battle Network in celebration of the series’ 15th anniversary. At one point, Masakazu Eguchi, Kouetsu Matsuda, and Hayato Kaji recall how it started out as a horror game of all things.
Here’s the excerpt, as translated by Mega Man Battle Network 3D:
Now that you mention it— It was a launch title, wasn’t it? Even though EXE was of the first generation (of GBA titles), it already gave an impression of perfection.
Eguchi: Actually, the team’s first game was a horror game.
Oh? What do you mean?
Eguchi: It started with, “what should we make for the GBA?” It had us making a game that links to your heartbeat with a wearable device. The theme was “having fun while your heart pounds”-horror game.
Matsuda: I went to Expoland’s haunted house for research.
Kaji: You remember it quite well, huh? (laughs)
Eguchi: Thinking that now… how did that become EXE? (laughs) I wonder…?
Kaji: Certainly, the mechanics became quite difficult to handle.
Matsuda: After that, card games gained popularity around that time. We wanted to reap the trend while upholding Capcom’s pride.
Update: Layoffs, not shut down – Scribblenauts developer closing its doors

Update 2: Here’s what Slaczka told Polygon:
“WB cancelled [Scribblenauts: Fighting Words] today so we had to lay off the staff. It happened so quick we’re not sure what the plans are going forward yet.”
Update: Despite what we’ve been hearing, 5th Cell has not shut down. The studio did lay off some employees following layoffs last week, but creative director Jeremiah Slaczka says the company remains in operation. Layoffs came about to due Warner Bros. cancelling a Scribblenauts mobile game, according to Kotaku. Slaczka added that the remaining staff is “tiny”.
RIP 5TH Cell. If anyone is looking for kickass artists, programmers, designers, QA, IT, and more, let me know. pic.twitter.com/xwMZVF76Wb

5th Cell, makers of the Scribblenauts series, is closing its doors. That significant piece of information comes by the way of the studio’s lead animator Tim Borrelli.
Scribblenauts was definitely the biggest name attached to 5th Cell, and the series was hugely successful back in the day. On Nintendo platforms, the company also created Drawn to Life and Lock’s Quest.

The Pokemon Company International has teamed up with British artist Quentin Devine to create the largest trading card mosaic.
The piece, unveiled in Paris today, is comprised of 12,987 individual Pokemon Trading Card Game cards, measures at 71.54 square meters, and hangs at over 10 meters tall and 7 meters wide. It has managed to secure a new world record, interestingly enough.
The newly-unveiled mosaic features an image of Pikachu, using the original iconic pose drawn by Game Freak illustrator Ken Sugimori.

Capcom survey asks about Mega Man 11, collections fans would be interested in
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News | 105 Comments
Capcom included a link to a survey in the Japanese version of Mega Man Legacy Collection. Two questions in particular stand out.
At one point of the survey, Capcom asks if “you would like to play a new entry in the classic series (like Mega Man 11).” A third section pertains to future collections, and asks which past series (X, Zero, Legends, Battle Network, ZX, Star Force) fans would like to see in a package.
I’m not one to make a big deal out of surveys, but this one is a bit interesting. Will anything materialize based on how fans respond? That I’m unsure of!
Pokemon CEO on the series’ early days and rise in popularity, bringing it west, more

A few weeks ago, Japanese outlet Inside Games published a lengthy interview with Pokemon CEO/president Tsunekazu Ishihara. There was a tiny bit about the current status/future of the series (Pokemon GO), but it was more reflective about the franchise in general and its past. Ishihara went in-depth about how the game series started and the importance of the Link Cable which helped boost popularity, bringing the franchise overseas and naming Pokemon, and more.
It took some time, but we now have a complete translation of the interview. Head past the break to read it in full.
