Chris Meledandri

Here’s a bit of interesting news stemming from Nintendo’s financial report. Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination Entertainment, is expected to become an outside director at the Big N. The move should go into effect during Nintendo’s 81st Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on June 29.

Nintendo and Illumination are currently partnering on the upcoming Super Mario animated movie. Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto are closely involved with the project.

Gamescom 2021 was previously announced as a hybrid event, with the hope that a portion of the show could be held in-person. Those plans have now changed. Show organizers confirmed today that Gamescom 2021 is going all digital once again.

Today’s announcement explains the decision:

May is here, which means that we’re in the month of Miitopia on Switch. My Nintendo is gearing up for the game’s launch with a couple of new rewards. Along with a May calendar, you can pick up a wallpaper.

Both of these rewards are priced at 50 Platinum Points each. You can redeem them here.

Over the past few years, Nintendo has started to stress the importance of its IPs beyond just video games. That’s what’s led to things like Super Nintendo World and the upcoming animated movie based on Mario.

The good news is that if you only care about games, Nintendo has looked to ensure that development resources aren’t impacted. President Shuntaro Furukawa told Fast Company:

Despite Nintendo’s wide variety of franchises, the company hasn’t done much with movies. There was the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, but that’s pretty much it.

Although it’s taken a few decades, Nintendo is finally experimenting with movies once again. An animated Mario film will debut in 2022 thanks to a collaboration with Illumination.

Konami will not be attending E3 2021, the company has confirmed. That’s due to the timing of the event and when games would be ready for showtime.

On the topic of future releases, Konami says it’s “in deep development on a number of key projects” and will share “some updates in the coming months.”
