super mario rpg 2

Chihiro Fujioka, the director of Super Mario RPG, has expressed interest in making Super Mario RPG 2 that would close out his career.

Fujioka has worked on many different titles going back to the early 80s. That includes several entries in the Mario & Luigi at AlphaDream – a studio which he co-founded, though he left the studio in 2015 and it closed in 2019 after filing for bankruptcy.

For a long time now, Directs are the primary channel in which Nintendo communicates with its fans. These presentations provide updates about what’s being developed internally and always keeping the cycle of hype alive.

With more than ten years of producing these videos, Nintendo evolved a lot, changing the format and trying to create better and more entertaining presentations. Since 2017 it seems that they finally found a good formula, usually bringing a lot of new and exciting announcements. In the video below I analyze Directs to understand how Nintendo managed to refine the formula. You can watch it down below.

EGGLIA Rebirth interview

Shinichi Kameoka has had a pretty distinguished career. One of his most notable achievements was Mother 3, of which he worked on the game as a producer. He was also a system designer, character designer, and scenario writer for the original Mana series, including Secret of Mana and SaGa Frontier.

Kameoka’s studio Brownies just put out a new title on Switch in the form of EGGLIA Rebirth. We were recently given the chance to speak with him about releasing the game on Nintendo’s console as well as a few other topics.

It’s no secret that there have been component shortages for all sorts of technology, including Switch. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has now said that the situation is starting to impact the company’s gross profit due to increased costs.

During Nintendo’s financial results briefing last week, Furukara explained that the “rise is gradual” and there will only be a small impact this fiscal year. However, “if costs continue at current levels through next fiscal year as well, then we would expect hardware profitability to decrease correspondingly compared to this fiscal year.” Also brought up is how the Switch OLED has a lower profit margin compared to the standard Switch and Switch Lite.

Furukawa stated:

switch evergreen

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa spoke about sales of evergreen Switch titles during the company’s financial results briefing last week.

According to Furukawa, the system saw a percentage of 50-60 percent for older first-party software over the past few months. He mentioned that new Switch buyers tend to pick up “an evergreen title as their second or third game.” However, going forward, Nintendo expects that there’ll be “more purchases of multiple systems within the same household, as well as consumers replacing a previous Nintendo Switch system with Nintendo Switch – OLED Model.”

Nintendo NFTs

During the Q&A portion of its financial results briefing last week, Nintendo was asked about the metaverse and NFTs. While we had a very brief summary at the time, the full and official comments are now available.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed the news directly. In his response, he mentioned how the metaverse “has great potential”, but also admitted that there’s currently “no easy way to define specifically what kinds of surprises and enjoyment the metaverse can deliver to our consumers.” Fans will likely be happy to hear that it sounds like Nintendo has no immediate plans to pursue this space.

Furukawa’s full comments regarding Nintendo, NFTs, and the metaverse can be found below.

PlatinumGames vice president Hideki Kamiya has commented on Bayonetta 3 as part of an interview with IGN.

Kamiya told the site that the Switch exclusive will have “its own color” compared to prior entries in the series. He also teased that there’ll be “new types of gameplay”.

Kamiya stated:

A new February 2022 Nintendo Direct aired this week, and it was quite the juicy one. Nintendo itself had its fair share of announcements per usual, and third-parties jumped in with some news as well.

Looking strictly at what Nintendo brought to the show, the company revealed Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Mario Strikers: Battle League, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Houses, and Nintendo Switch Sports. We also found out that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be getting some pretty big DLC in the form of 48 remastered tracks that will drop in six waves through 2023. EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings joined Switch Online, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp got a new release date, Kirby and the Forgotten Land unveiled Mouthful Mode, and Splatoon 3 showed off its Salmon Run mode.

mother 3 localization worldwide release

It’s been over 15 years since Mother 3’s original debut, but the RPG has never received an official English localization. However, one important developer that worked on the project hopes to see that happen someday.

Producer Shinichi Kameoka recently told Nintendo Everything that much like the fans, he’d “also love to see Mother 3 released in the US and Europe.” He added: “As a lover of games, I will continue to wait for Mother 3’s release worldwide release (in English).
