Pikachu

Yomiuri Shimbun has gained new insight about the creation of Pikachu after speaking to some of the original game’s developers, including illustrators Atsuko Nishida and Ken Sugimori.

All those years ago, Nishida was asked to create a “cute monster” that met two conditions. In addition to it being an “electric type” with electric attacks, it also needed to have two stages of evolution.

Shuntaro Furukawa

Assuming he’s approved in a couple of months from now, Shuntaro Furukawa will be promoted to president of Nintendo. He’ll be taking over for Tatsumi Kimishima, the current president.

At Nintendo’s financial results briefing last week, Furukawa was asked about his goals at the company. He pointed to maintaining Switch’s momentum, expanding mobile efforts, looking at projects like Super Nintendo World and movies, and “how we can lay down new pathways that positively enhance our dedicated video game platform business.”

Today, Japanese publication Nikkei published some new comments from soon-to-be Nintendo president Shuntaro Fukugawa as well as current president Tatsumi Kimishima. The two discussed the company’s mobile ambitions, plans to expand Switch into other regions, and more.

While Nintendo’s consolidated operating profit has increased thanks to Switch, Fukugawa wants to increase performance in other areas as well – with mobile being a specific highlight. The policy under Fukugawa will be to improve the smartphone game business with a title that can generate an explosive hit. Nintendo is looking for smartphone game operations to become a 100 billion yen ($910 million) business.

Ikagura - Nintendo Switch

Ikaruga is coming to Switch, Treasure and Nicalis have announced. It will cost $14.99.

Treasure, who is also responsible for Nintendo’s Sin and Punishment series, originally made Ikaruga for the arcades in 2001. The vertical shooter would end up on GameCube a couple of years later.

In April, the Federal Trade Commission warned six companies about warranty violations. Motherboard reports that Nintendo was one of those companies. Sony, Microsoft, Hyundai, HTC, and ASUS were the others.

In letters sent out to each company, the FTC states that customers have been illegally told about having their warranty voided by getting third-party repairs. Such information is relayed through stickers and messages in end user license agreements. It’s a violation of the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in that manufacturers charging over $5 for a product can’t put repair restrictions on a device its offering a warranty on.

Nintendo Switch

Last year, Gamevice filed a lawsuit against Nintendo. The company wasn’t happy with Switch as its detachable controllers bear a resemblance to the Wikipad, which had been patented previously and had been implemented in past products. Gamevice was seeking compensation and a ban on Switch sales.

The U.S. International Trade Commission today voted to begin an investigation following a complaint from Gamevice. The complaint was filed on March 30, which requests “a limited exclusion order and cease and desist orders.”

Kirby Star Allies

Shortly after launch, Nintendo and HAL Laboratory added new Dream Friends to Kirby Star Allies with an update. Marx, Gooey, and character set “Rick & Kine & Coo” all joined the game.

As we know, these aren’t the only new Dream Friends planned for Kirby Star Allies. Nintendo promised that additional ones would be added in the future. Thanks to some datamining, we now know who they are.

After Nintendo issued Super Mario Odyssey version 1.2.0, dataminers uncovered upcoming costumes for the game. A few of these have been added thus far, including the Satellaview Helmet and Satellaview Suit, Batting Helmet and Baseball Uniform, and Topper Hat and Topper Suit.

Last night, images leaked of what looks like the rest of the costumes Nintendo will be bringing out in the future following a new datamine. If you’re interested in getting a closer look, continue on below.
