1996 interview with Miyamoto, Super Mario 64 developers available in English for the first time

Two seperate interviews from 1996 with Shigeru Miyamoto and other Nintendo employees who worked on Super Mario 64 together were recently translated and published on the website Shmuplations for any interested party to read.
The interviews come from a time where Super Mario 64 had just been released and was making waves in the gaming world. The questions cover a variety of topics about Super Mario 64, focusing mostly on the creative process of designing a game in 3D compared to 2D and the early history of the game.
On the origins of Super Mario 64 and how the project got started, Miyamoto had this to say:
Well, in the beginning… we were working on something really simple—deceptively simple, even, from the perspective of the team that would go on to finish the huge, final game. (laughs) There was a room made of simple lego-like blocks, and Mario and Luigi could run around in there, climb slopes, jump around, etc. We were trying to get the controls right with an analogue 3D stick, and once that felt smooth, we knew we were halfway there. And so, along the way, we realized wanted to create a slightly larger area for them to move around in…
Happy 127th birthday, Nintendo

We’re a Nintendo blog, so we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out Nintendo’s birthday! That’s right: the company is celebrating its big day today, now that it’s officially September 23 in Japan. Nintendo has been around for 127 years having been established way back on September 23, 1889.
While we remember the big N’s past, we also have our eyes on the future. The company is heading in an interesting direction between NX, the new push on mobile this year, and reaching out into other areas like the Universal Studios partnership. Hopefully we’ll be able to celebrate many more of Nintendo’s birthdays in the years to come!

Pokemon GO is available in a ton of different countries, but Niantic still hopes to expand the game to new regions. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, The Pokemon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara said China and South Korea are targets. However, issues would need to be addressed with Google Maps, as its use is limited in both territories.
Ishihara also commented on the overall response to Pokemon GO. “I feel like the reaction we saw was 10 times or even 100 times bigger than we expected,” he said.
The Wall Street Journal reports that additional features were planned for Pokemon GO, such as player-to-player battles and character trades. These elements are now being saved for a later date.

Update (9/20): Despite what the original listing indicated, the adapter is not an official Nintendo product. Here’s the packaging:

Original (8/19): New Zealand retailer MightyApe has put up a listing for a new Nintendo-made 3DS AC adapter. It’s a wall plug with a separate 3DS charge cable that inserts into the plug through a USB input. Apparently, it will also be compatible with the NES Mini.
MightyApe includes a tentative September 30 release date. The product will cost $13.99.
MightyApe was actually the first retailer to list the new Fire Emblem Fates and Smash Bros. 3DS amiibo bundles, which we originally heard about yesterday and were confirmed earlier today. Nintendo may have something the new 3DS adapter soon.
Developers MercurySteam refute the rumor that they were working on a Metroid prototype

About a year ago, we reported that Spanish developers MercurySteam once pitched a prototype for a new first-person Metroid game to Nintendo. This info came from Liam Robertson, who has uncovered tons of info on cancelled or never released games in the past.
Today, Eurogamer published an extensive interview with Enric Alvarez from MercurySteam and producer Dave Cox, who is working with them on their current project. The supposed Metroid prototype game is also briefly discussed – and dismissed by Alvarez:
Eurogamer: Is the rumour that you created a Metroid prototype for Wii U and 3DS also bullshit?
