Best Nintendo Directs

With June 2024’s Nintendo Direct all wrapped up, we thought it’d be a good time to pick five of the best Nintendo Directs and ask you: which one is your favorite of all time?

Nintendo Directs are no doubt one of the absolute highlights of being a Nintendo fan. In some ways, it sort of feels like we live “Direct to Direct” – after a presentation comes and goes, we’re already looking forward to the next one, no matter how far it is. The presentations vary in the quality and quantity of their announcements, but are always something to look forward to.

Super Nintendo World interactive wall

Super Nintendo World continues to evolve, and the theme park at Universal Studios Hollywood just added a new interactive wall. It can be found within the Frosted Glacier area.

According to Universal, the wall “is designed to challenge guests as they engage with familiar Super Mario characters within the dynamic land.” Visitors can collect digital coins and stamps through the Power-Up Band while keeping track of their score as they challenge themselves each time they play.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD double keychain My Nintendo

Going along with the release of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, a new reward was just added to My Nintendo. Members can now claim a double keychain.

Luigi is featured here along with the Poltergust 5000. Also, the Polterpup is included as part of the design.

Nintendo Live Tokyo 2024 arrest

April 3: According to the Kyoto Shimbun, police have made an arrest followings threats tied to the cancelled Nintendo Live Tokyo 2024 event.

Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo, which would have taken place this past January, was cancelled at the start of December. The suspect made “persistent threats” against employees as well as participants ahead of the Splatoon Koshien 2023 finals. Nintendo Live Tokyo 2024 was cancelled as a precautionary measure.

Pikmin Bulborb Nendoroid

Good Smile shared the latest on the Pikmin Bulborb Nendoroid, and we have news about the release date and pre-orders. New photos have been shared as well.

Bulborb is one of the most recognizable enemies in the Pikmin series. For the new Nendoroid, it’ll come with a standard face and closed-eyes face. Also, as optional parts, you’ll get the standing Pikmin and dangling Pikmin.

Donkey Kong potential names

Donkey Kong is one of Nintendo’s most-recognized characters and franchises, but it turns out that the name could have gone in a different direction.

You may recall that in 1983, Nintendo and Universal were going head to head in court over the IP. Universal wasn’t happy with “Donkey Kong”, feeling that it was based on King Kong. Nintendo won in the end, and the final name stuck after a judge determined that it was  “at best” a parody.

Shigeru Miyamoto age game development

With each year that goes by, longtime game creator and Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto receives more and more questions about his role at the company. Miyamoto hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down at 71, but his role has transitioned into things such as focusing on the Mario movies. Super Mario Run in 2016 was actually his last official role as director.

During Nintendo’s shareholders meeting today, Miyamoto was once again asked about his role when it comes to game development given his age. As we’ve heard before, the younger generation is now taking center stage. However, Miyamoto pointed out that he’s “very involved with Pikmin Bloom” – the game actually just received a new feature this week, which we have details about here.

Nintendo franchises

Nintendo introduces new IPs from time to time, but the company is certainly known for its franchises. Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing are just some of the series that fans have come to love over the many years that the Big N has been around.

According to Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo is considering both sequels and new IPs. That news comes from the company’s latest shareholders meeting that took place earlier today.

Nintendo leaks response

Gaming companies have long been affected  by information leaks, and Nintendo is no stranger to that. Over the years, various “insiders” have come forward to share news about upcoming games before they’re announced.

We previously heard that some Nintendo leaks came about due to private YouTube videos being accessed by a Google employee. However, it goes beyond that. Pyoro is one such person who was known for leaking contents from Nintendo Directs – though that may now be over after some fans seemed to have uncovered his methods.
