This week’s issue of Famitsu has a big update on Rodea: The Sky Soldier. The magazine introduces the “R series” of humanoid robots, new characters, and more.

R Series

One portion of Famitsu’s article reveals information about the “R series”. This is a series of humanoid robots with the power of flight.

The emperor of Naga empire, Giado, launched the “R project” to produce robots to use as a spearhead in invading other countries. Rodea has lost the memory of that event, and is now protecting the people of Garuda by confronting his former allies. Rodea was a prototype, so the other members of the R series are more powerful.

Speaking of Giado, Famitsu has a couple of tidbits about the character. He was formerly a good father of Cecilia. That all changes, and he has since enhanced his body with machine parts.

Below is the full rundown of the R series:

The latest edition of Famitsu DS+Wii has started to make its way out to readers in Japan, and there’s a noteworthy inclusion in the magazine. Towards the end, there is a tease regarding a big announcement about a major upcoming title for Nintendo systems. Sadly, there isn’t much said about this, but we’ll be hearing about it in the next issue of Famitsu DS+Wii.

Some Japanese news websites have speculated that the announcement could be related to Dragon Quest news teased by V-Jump. In a blog post on Dragon Quest X, V-Jump mentioned upcoming news on the series, saying that something concrete would be announced soon. Given that Dragon Quest X is available for the Wii U and 3DS, perhaps the announcement is for an expansion or new game in the series. Others have speculated that the news is related to Level-5’s Vision 2015 event early next month, which promises a look at upcoming titles like Yo-Kai Watch 3 and Fantasy Life 2.

Whether or not these rumors are related remains to be seen, and we’ll likely have to keep on speculating on any future announcements until next month’s Famitsu DS+Wii goes on sale.

Cell9 has come up with new custom firmware for Japanese New 3DS systems that makes region-free gaming possible.

“NTR CFW 2.0” has one purpose: to enable titles from around the world to be playable on the system. Piracy is not possible in any way, and only retail cartridges are acceptable.

The one downside is that you won’t be able to boot up the Japanese eShop. However, you can access a custom menu to take in-game screens and use plug-ins.

Gamers will need a Japanese New 3DS and an import copy of Cubic Ninja in order to use NTR CFW 2.0. Keep in mind that it only works with 3DS firmware versions 8.1.0/9.1.0/9.2.0.

As for what lies ahead in the future, Cell9 hopes to support the original 3DS and other regions at some point.

SEGA has been releasing several 3DS themes in Japan based on classic consoles. Two more came out this week: one based on the SG-1000, and another for the Dreamcast.

How’d SEGA go about making these themes anyway? Photos from the company’s Yosuke Okunari provide some interesting insight. Through pictures shared on Okunari’s Twitter account, it’s revealed that SEGA actually used the old consoles in recording sounds for the themes.

Specifically regarding the SG-1000 3DS theme, Okunari commented:

We wanted to recreate the short “Buu” sound when turning on the console for the SG-1000 theme and so we brought the console to the studio for recording. However, that sound varies depending on the software so we started up roughly 20 games and chose the one which sounded the most authentic.
