Mr. Driller DrillLand

System: Switch (eShop)
Release date: June 25, 2020
Developer: Bandai Namco
Publisher: Bandai Namco

Mr. Driller DrillLand is a relic of a lost time. Initially released in 2002 on the GameCube in Japan, this classic entry in the Mr. Driller series is finally arriving in the rest of the world for the first time through this remastered release on Switch. It feels like a swansong to the classic arcade puzzle game formula – it has all the simplicity, penny-pinching difficulty, and endless addictive qualities that have made arcade games so memorable for decades, all polished up to perfection thanks to its immaculate audio-visual presentation and excellent gameplay variety. And with new HD visuals and a few modern adjustments in the Switch version, there’s never been a better time to dig in.

RPG Maker MV

It’s been a long wait for RPG Maker MV’s Switch version in the west. Japan has had the game creation title since November 2018, but it’s still not out in North America and Europe. The good news is that, despite a lack of news from NIS America, the localized version is still in the works.

During this week’s New Game+ Expo presentation, RPG Maker MV briefly appeared during the montage segment. It was shown off for just a few seconds which is probably why it went under the radar, but we did receive confirmation that NIS America is now planning a Fall 2020 launch. This is the first update we’ve had in quite some time.

In January 2019, NIS America delayed RPG Maker MV from its planned February release. It received a new trailer a couple of months later, though that’s pretty much it since then. Here’s hoping that there won’t be any additional delays and the localization process goes smoothly.

Thanks to Jake for the tip.

Like previous games in the series, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will once again feature Gunvolt. This time around though, a new character named Kirin is also being introduced. Kirin uses a katana in battle.

Bravely Default II

Square Enix has provided a status update on Bravely Default II. According to a message posted on social media, the RPG is in the final stages of development. The news was relayed alongside the announcement that the mobile game Bravely Default: Fairy’s Effect will be shutting down on August 31.

Bravely Default II was announced for Switch at The Game Awards 2019 in December. The title is launching later this year, so it’s not entirely surprising that things are starting to wrap up. Perhaps we’ll be seeing it sooner rather than later.
