Wii U eShop

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The five beloved sports from the original Wii Sports game – bowling, tennis, baseball, boxing and golf – are making a dramatic and competitive return on Wii U. Starting today, two of the five sports – tennis and bowling – are now available in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U.

The sports are being released individually as downloads in the Nintendo eShop, and feature HD graphics, enhanced controls via Wii MotionPlus technology, as well as a much-requested online multiplayer versus mode, so users with broadband Internet access can face off against friends and family members online. Players can choose to associate themselves with various state or regional clubs and can send messages to one another via Miiverse. People can play casually against members of their own club, or take on members of rival clubs to increase their club rankings.

It’s no secret that Beyond Good & Evil did not perform up to Ubisoft’s expectations. While the game was met with a great reception from critics, it wasn’t a financial hit.

The fact that Beyond Good & Evil was essentially a commercial failure still causes Ubisoft to be cautious today. According to Child of Light creative director Patrick Plourde, the publisher was hesitant to move forward the project.

Plourde told GamesIndustry:

“If the game is a missed opportunity, then it’s going to be a missed opportunity for years. Even when I pitched Child of Light, they mentioned Beyond Good & Evil. They said ‘Beyond Good & Evil was not a success, and we made that mistake once.’ And it’s like, yeah, but it’s 10 years ago… If somebody tries something and fails, there are going to be repercussions for other people. For me it would be a shame if that happens. I don’t think people are malevolent or evil about that. It’s just if it fails, they’re going to be careful greenlighting other projects like that.”

Wario’s Woods may be releasing on the Virtual Console tomorrow. Nintendo’s website has entries in its database up for Wii U and 3DS versions. Note that these listings are tentative, so they’re not officially confirmed at this time.

There hasn’t been much news about the Wii U version of Project CARS, but it’s fortunately still on track. Slightly Mad Studios has confirmed plans to release the game in fall 2014.

Studio head Ian Bell said:

“Project CARS has always led the pack in terms of insane detail. Whether that’s graphically in the craftsmanship of our cars and tracks, technically in the way we’ve approached weather and time of day, or emotionally in how each car feels and responds to your touch. These powerful new platforms allow us therefore to not compromise on the quality of our vision and ultimately that means players are going to experience something truly breathtaking when they get behind the wheel.”

Indie project “Tadpole Treble” is seeking funding on Kickstarter. The campaign will need to reach $30,000 in order to reach its goal.

At $50,000, a Wii U version will be assured. Nintendo has already given the go-ahead, so the only roadblock preventing a release on the console are the amount of available funds.

Studio Fawn’s Bloom: Memories, an action-adventure RPG, may end up on Wii U. In fact, the company says there’s “a pretty good chance” of that happening. We’ll likely be seeing it after the initial release so that Wii U-specific GamePad features can be added in.

One fan asked Studio Fawn about the potential Wii U version on Twitter. In response, the indie dev said:

You can find Bloom: Memories on Kickstarter here.

Nintendo’s Virtual Console has been disappointing, to say the least. Releases continue to trickle out very slowly, with some weeks seeing the absence of new classic games entirely.

With any luck, the situation will improve in the future. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said during an investors Q&A briefing several days ago that the company has been unable “to take full advantage of our assets yet, so we would like to enrich our Virtual Console lineup.” Iwata added, “As the ability to digitally offer our products has given us greater flexibility in offering new propositions to our consumers, we should naturally consider these possibilities in the future.”
