Wii U

Three more videos have come in comparing the new HD and original versions of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, each of which are below. These will likely be the final comparisons we’ll be posting for the game.

With PlatinumGames celebrating its tenth anniversary, Japanese magazine Famitsu has a big feature about the studio in its latest issue, including an interview with several staff members. It focuses more on the developer as a whole rather than specific games. There are some interesting Nintendo-related bits from the discussion though.

Hideki Kamiya has only made two games in the last ten years at Platinum. Of course, those are Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101. Kamiya created the original Bayonetta with the following prerequisites: make an original game with hardware you’re touching for the first time with no library, no resources, and no game engine. He wanted to have it published in three years.

Last month, we found out that The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 would be coming to Wii U. Amazon UK listed the game for release on March 22. We knew it would be heading to North America as well thanks an ESRB rating – we just didn’t know when.

GameFly is now one of the first retailers to have officially listed the Wii U version of The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 in North America. Assuming it’s accurate (and right now we have no reason to believe otherwise), we’ll be seeing the title in North America on March 22 as well.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima took on a number of investor questions during Nintendo’s financial results briefing a few days ago. One of the more interesting responses came about towards the end of the event. Most of what the question asked is over my head and there will be an official translation in a few days, but it was essentially about the next financial period, and how Wii U and 3DS factors into that.

Kimishima starts off by reiterating a key point from his presentation: the spread amount of 3DS systems is 20 million units domestically, and 54 million units worldwide. This means Nintendo’s handheld had a big chance to obtain profits from software as well. As for what lies ahead in the next period, Kimishima said development on software continues, including large-scale titles that can’t be announced just yet. He believes that the 3DS will remain a big pillar in the next period.

YouTube user “Luigikid Gaming” has secured an early copy of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and posted 40 minutes of footage showing Hero Mode. Take a look at the video below.

Update 3: Bumped to the top again. Appears to be back at Amazon.

Update 2: Bumped to the top. Now in stock at GameStop.

Update: Now gone. That actually lasted longer than I thought it would!

Devil’s Third is a game that’s been pretty tough to find at retail for awhile now. If you’re looking to obtain a copy though, Amazon currently has the game available. It’s back-ordered, but stock should be arriving on February 14. We’ll see how long this lasts!

Aside from the new level which adds the Professor E. Gadd costume, Super Mario Maker recently added a few other ones in the Event Course section. Players can try out four courses made for Tokaigi 2016, a Japanese gaming event. They’re pretty tough, so you may have difficulty completing them all!

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash finally launched in Japan last week. To celebrate, Famitsu spoke with a few developers who worked on the game. The lineup includes director Shugo Takahashi and producer Hiroyuki Takahashi from Camelot as well as Nintendo producer Toshiharu Izuno.

Our complete translation of the interview can be found after the break. The staff touched on topics like approaching HD development for the first time, how new characters were selected, amiibo integration, and online play. There’s also an interesting bit about how Nintendo was initially opposed to including Boo in Mario Tennis 64.

More online Wii U maintenance is set for early next week (online play, rankings, etc.). This will be taking place on Tuesday for folks in North America, and just as Wednesday begins in Europe.

– 1:50 AM in Europe (Wednesday) – 3:30 AM in Europe (Wednesday)

This isn’t the only maintenance happening next week. The Wii U and 3DS eShops, Wii Shopping Channel, and DSi Shop will be down on Monday.

Nintendo was the top-rated publisher in Metacritic’s 2014 rankings. In 2015, the company came in at the sixth spot.

Nintendo’s best overall release last year was Mario Kart 8’s second DLC pack, which earned a 90 percent average (also users’ favorite at 9.2). On the other end of the spectrum, Devil’s Third was the worst with an average of 43 percent from critics. Splatoon was the best new IP with 81 percent.

Here’s the analysis from Metacritic:

“It wasn’t a good year for the Nintendo brand. A year after finishing first in our rankings, Nintendo saw its average Metascore decline by nearly five points and its percentage of games receiving positive reviews fall from 56% to just 41%. The company once again released more unique titles than any other publisher, but too few of them connected with critics. The duds seemed to be spread fairly evenly among Nintendo’s two platforms, with its Wii U titles averaging 71.3 and its 3DS games averaging 71.9.”

And here are the overall 2015 rankings:
