Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Even though Kirby has been around for three decades, the series never really tried its hand at full-on 3D gameplay. That finally changed this year with the release of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. By all accounts, the team really nailed it – but that doesn’t mean turning Kirby from 2D to 3D was a simple task.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land co-directors Shinya Kumazaki and Tatsuya Kamiyama reflected on the game’s development in a recent interview of Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream. Designer Yuki Endo was present for the discussion as well.

According to the latest sales data from GfK, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is now the most successful Kirby game in the UK. That tidbit of information is based strictly on physical sales. However, digital downloads are more prominent than they’ve ever been, making the game’s success even more significant.

We previously reported that Kirby and the Forgotten Land had the biggest Kirby launch ever in the UK. At the start of April, it became the series’ fourth best-selling entry.

Shinya Kumazaki, the director of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, has spoken about the origins of Mouthful Mode in a recent issue of Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream.

Mouthful Mode lets Kirby transform into various objects for different types of gameplay experiences. After inhaling a car for instance, the character can drive around and smash through walls.

Kirby's Dream Buffet

Kirby’s Dream Buffet is coming to Switch, Nintendo just announced. It will launch this summer.

According to Nintendo, Kirby’s Dream Buffet “finds Kirbys rolling through a smorgasbord of food-themed stages in four rounds of frantic multiplayer fun. Players will race each other through these delicious obstacle courses to collect strawberries as Kirby grows, bumping other players off the stage and using familiar Copy Abilities – or Copy Food Abilities, as they are called in this game – to thwart the competition.”

The glitch appears to be limited to underwater levels. Reddit user keyblademasternadroj shared the news, noting that when players are hit by certain damage sources in the water, they become stunned indefinitely. Unfortunately, the only course of action is to quit the level.

Since 1992, Kirby has brought along a multitude of adventures on just about every generation of Nintendo hardware with many planets, worlds, and creative levels.
