Square Enix has come out with four commercials for Dragon Quest VIII, all of which are in the video below. The first two are gameplay while the others are live action.

Square Enix sent out another update for the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VIII today. This time around, we have details and screenshots that mainly pertain to the post-ending story players unlock after completing the main story.

Here’s the latest:

– The new story will reveal “a certain secret” related to the protagonist
– The protagonist stands in front of a door, beyond which this new story begins
– There’s also an unfamiliar town where there appears to be no sign of life
– After discovering a mysterious stairway, the protagonist will come across an unknown foursome of monsters
– These monsters fuse together to become a single monster of overwhelming strength
– Within a dungeon, you’ll encounter a huge dragon that claims itself to be the Dragon God Sovereign
– Dragon God Sovereign is voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda
– A “shocking truth” will be revealed after the fight, and the protagonist will not hide his astonishment
– This is unrelated to the new ending first teased in Jump magazine last week
– It instead appears to be part of that “Ultimate Trial” dungeon with “Purple Treasure Chests” that opens up after clearing the game

Square Enix released the first direct-feed screenshots from Dragon Quest XI on 3DS today. View them in the gallery below.

Note: although it seems likely that the PlayStation 4 (“console version”) will be on NX, we won’t be covering that edition until we receive complete confirmation.

Square Enix’s Diffusion Million Arthur has reached 500,000 downloads, the company announced last week. The free-to-play 3DS game launched in Japan last October. There’s no word on Diffusion Million Arthur heading west at this time.

Final Fantasy XIV may have a shot of coming to the NX. Director and producer Naoki Yoshida has said that he’s waiting to know when the console will be released, and the company would need to talk with Nintendo about the policies regarding cross-platform gameplay before a port can be considered. Note that negotiations with Nintendo have not yet been started.

We have a few more screenshots of Dragon Quest VIII on 3DS. Each image can be seen in the gallery below.

According to the latest issue of Jump, Dragon Quest VIII will have a new ending. The magazine only provides clues of “a surprising development,” “furious King Clavius,” and “the protagonist gets depressed.”

Additionally, after completing Dragon Quest VIII, Jump mentions that players can take on a new dungeon called “The Ultimate Trial”. This has players looking for a never-before-seen “purple treasure chest.”

Last week, Square Enix announced the latest installment in the Dragon Quest franchise. The fact that the game is being released for PS4 and 3DS simultaneously was already a big enough surprise, but no one expected that Dragon Quest XI (and Dragon Quest X) would be announced for Nintendo’s NX as well. In a press release issued after the announcement, however, the wording changed from a “planned” NX release to a “considered” NX release.

Kotaku reached out to Square Enix for clarification and got the following response:

“Our press release contained the official statement that had been originally planned, and there is no reason to believe any changes were made mid-way to the content of the official announcement. The comment made during the event was not based on the official statement, so please allow us to correct our statement at this moment. We regret any confusion this may have caused.”

Looks like we’ll likely have to wait until an official announcement from Nintendo before we hear anything new about the NX versions of Dragon Quest X and XI.
