Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still has a long life ahead of it. Just went some may have thought that DLC for the game could be coming to an end, it was revealed during last month’s Nintendo Direct that even more characters are on the way.

Thus far, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players have been able to get their hands on Joker, Hero, and Banjo-Kazooie through DLC. We also know that Fatal Fury fighter Terry Bogard has been confirmed. That means the Smash Bros. Fighter Pass has one more character left, and then an unspecified amount of roster additions will follow.

Let’s think about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s future for a second. Are there any characters in particular you’d like to see join? The possibilities are still endless. If you have any thoughts to share, let us know in the comments below.

Hello, my geese and goslings! This week on NEP we’ve got some controversial and complex talking points: Hero being banned then unbanned in official Nintendo France tournaments (and what constitutes an OP character or a ban), Mario Kart Tour and the success and failure of mobile games and how that affects genuine gaming, and the Switch Lite launching on the market. We then get some great listener mail sent to us and we blather on there, too, because complex issues require complex analysis.

If you’re enjoying NEP, please consider giving us a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts, aka new iTunes. It’s incredibly helpful in getting us exposed to new listeners through algorithms, so we would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you for listening!

As previously mentioned, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate took home the top prize at the Japan Game Awards 2019, which was held at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this month. Director Masahiro Sakurai accepted the win and also delivered a speech. You can watch a full translation of what was said below.

New information has emerged about the addition of Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Director Masahiro Sakurai and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii discussed the character during today’s live stream for Dragon Quest XI S.

A few days ago, we had heard that Nintendo France banned Hero from the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate European Team Cup. Now, however, that decision has been reversed.

Nintendo has said in a statement that it will standardize rulesets for all tournaments on the European Team Cup circuit following the French qualifiers’s deviation. As part of that, Hero can be used going forward. The character had been eligible in other regions for the same tournament.

Nintendo’s full statement reads:

Nintendo has announced a new Spirit Board event for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Daemon X Machina will be featured, and as part of this, four new spirits will be available.

The new Spirit Board event kicks off on September 27. It will last for a total of five days.

As part of Bandai Namco’s developer talks at CEDEC, we had heard that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate initially weighed in at roughly 60GB before it was ultimately compressed to about 15GB. We now have a better understanding of what took up that space.

Here’s a rundown of the initial size, development size, and final size as well as what took up that data:

Ever since Hero made his debut in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, his inclusion in tournaments has been a strong point of contention. Some feel that his moveset is too random, leaving victories and defeats more in the hands of luck rather than skill. Because of this, some tournaments have started banning the character from inclusion.

Nintendo France has now made an interesting move of its own. For the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate European Team Cup 2019, participants will be unable to use Hero. Interestingly, this also applies to every DLC character released after September 23, so the decision appears to affect future events as well.
