Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Throughout the life cycle of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS, Nintendo prepared extra Mii Fighter costumes. We haven’t really seen this yet for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but that could be changing in the future.

Over on Nintendo’s customer support website, there’s a page for available Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC. It specifically mentions “Mii Fighter Costume” as part of that downloadable content. It states that one costume is included for $0.75, with a release planned for 2019.

We do have a small bit of doubt that Nintendo will be going all out with Mii Fighter costume DLC for Smash Bros. Ultimate. Though it could very well happen, we can’t help but wonder if the customer support site is referring to Rex. That Xenoblade Chronicles 2 outfit can only be obtained by purchasing the Fighters Pass currently. The fact that the page lists just a single costume may point to a wide release of the Rex costume. Either way, we should know come next year.

Joker from Persona 5 will be the first paid DLC character to be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. To promote this occasion, Masahiro Sakurai recently visited the office of Atlus for an interview, which you can see in the video below:

Nintendo is giving Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players a particular reason to pay attention to this week’s Spirit Board event. At 10 AM and 10 PM PT, the Golden Dash Mushroom will be appearing. This will be an Ace class spirit.

It looks like you’ll need to defeat the Mii Brawler in order to obtain the Golden Dash Mushroom. The task won’t be an easy one as it has super armor, will be hard to launch or make flinch, is very fast (but can’t stop quickly), and has increased attack power.

We now have a full translation of the latest column Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai published in this week’s issue of Famitsu. In it, he discusses Joker’s reveal at The Game Awards, plans for a bit of rest, reducing the team size for the development of DLC, and a brief comment on online play.

Here’s our full translation:

Update: We’ve now prepared a full translation of the column here.

Original: In early excerpts from this week’s Masahiro Sakurai column in Famitsu, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director has shared some new insight on the development of Joker as a playable character, the logistics of his reveal, and briefly addresses online play.

Thanks to user BlackKite on Twitter, translations of this information has been made known. The tidbits are included below.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will soon be cycling in one of its regular Spirit Board events. Starting on December 28, Nintendo is kicking off a new theme focusing on Mario.

While active, you’ll be able to find more Spirits centered around the Mario franchise. Defeating them will also net you more rewards than usual.

The Mario-focused Spirit Board event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will last for five days.

Masahiro Sakurai

In last week’s issue of Famitsu, the Japanese magazine shared a lengthy interview with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai. A slightly longer version was then issued on the publication’s website.

During the interview, Sakurai commented on most major aspects of the game. This includes when development itself actually started, Spirits (including World of Light), the new fighters, online play and eSports, and what lies ahead for the future. We’ve prepared a full translation of the discussion below.

DenFamiNicoGamer was recently given the opportunity to speak with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai. At one point of the discussion, Sakurai revealed that he wasn’t directly involved with character balancing for this game.

Siliconera translated the relevant portion of the interview. Here’s what Sakurai said on the subject:

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brought in a bunch of guest composers to arrange tracks for the game. Among these was Hiroshi Yamaguchi, who works at PlatinumGames. Yamaguchi ended up arranging “The Map Page/Bonus Level” from Donkey Kong Country.

Yamaguchi reflected on contributing to Smash Bros. in a post on PlatinumGames’ website this week. He shared the following:

A new update is now available for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which brings the game up to version 1.2.1. This is a rather small update, however the patch notes are pretty vague, only stating that “Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience”. Based on the formatting for the previous patch notes, it seems like no individual characters received any changes in this patch. As such, replays are compatible with the previous version, 1.2.0. However, version 1.2.1 is required for online and local wireless multiplayer.
