Update: Square Enix’s official press release says that when it comes to Dragon Quest XI, the company is “considering launching on Nintendo’s in development NX platform”. Dragon Quest X isn’t mentioned in the statement, though the same probably holds true for Dragon Quest X. It’s likely that both games will be formally confirmed when NX is revealed next year.

NX hasn’t been officially revealed by Nintendo yet, but the system already has a pair of game announcements. Square Enix confirmed during the “Dragon Quest New Title Presentation” today that both Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI are coming to the system.

We’re assuming that NX is a console, which means that Nintendo fans would be able to play both versions of Dragon Quest XI. Here’s a look at the PlayStation 4 version in action:

Square Enix hopes to have Dragon Quest XI ready to launch within the series’ 30th anniversary. Officially, that’s in May of next year.

Square Enix announced today that Dragon Quest XI is in development, and it’s coming to 3DS in addition to the PlayStation 4.

Producer Yosuke Saito said during a presentation held in Japan that the game will be a “standalone single-player game”. The 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI features the same story as the PlayStation 4 release.

Toy Logic, who assisted with the development of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Kid Icarus: Uprising, is handling Dragon Quest XI for 3DS. Takeshi Uchikawa is directing. Akira Toriyama is handling character designs, and Koichi Sugiyama is working on the game’s soundtrack.

The 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI naturally looks quite a bit different to its PS4 counterpart. The top screen featured 3D images while the touch screen has sprites. Battles take place in both 2D and 3D.

Take a look at the first gameplay of Dragon Quest XI on 3DS below.

Square Enix is targeting Dragon Quest XI for release within the franchise’s 30th anniversary, which is in May of next year.

The folks over at Anime News Network have published an interview with Suda51. The two sides talked a bunch about No More Heroes, Killer7, and even the Silver Case DS port that never made it to market.

You can find a few excerpts that we’ve picked out below. For the full interview, head on over here.

Nintendo’s website contains an additional tidbit about Splatoon’s August update.

In Private Battle, two to eight friends will be able to battle together in customizable matches. Nintendo’s page also says that it “allows players to hold small-scale custom tournaments using up to 8 Wii U consoles and games on a single Internet connection.”

Good stuff, Nintendo! Very good stuff.

Nintendo has now sent out an official announcement about Splatoon’s next big update. This will be available on August 5 in North America and August 6 in Europe.

The new Splatoon update adds two new matchmaking modes, new weapon types, an increase to the game’s level cap and over 40 pieces of new gear.

Here’s an overview of the upcoming matchmaking options:

The new update introduces Squad Battle and Private Battle matchmaking options. In Squad Battle, players can participate in Ranked Battle rule sets with friends, rather than being teamed up with other players through a random selection. After a player creates a squad, friends can be recruited to form a team of two to four Inklings. Friends will always play together on the same team and battle against other squads at random.

In Private Battle, friends can splat it up in private, customizable matches. Two to eight friends can battle together by selecting their favorite map, mode and weapons. The number of participants ranges from 1v1 to 4v4, but teams don’t have to be even: If the host chooses, he or she can select a 1v4, 1v2, or any other combination of players.

And the new weapons:

While Inklings around the world are enjoying and mastering the current arsenal of weapons in Splatoon, two new weapon types will be available with the update, adding a new layer of strategy to the game. The bucket-like Slosher weapons hurl ink straight ahead at an impressive range. By adjusting the angle, these new weapons can be used to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall. With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge blasts of all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type. In addition to the new weapons, more than 40 pieces of gear, including everything from a leather jacket to a sushi-chef costume, are coming to the various in-game shops in Splatoon.

Following the August update, Splatoon’s level cap will be increased in both Regular Battle and Ranked Battle. It will be possible to reach level 50 (raised from level 20) and rank S and S+. (higher than A+).

Nintendo says that more content will be coming to Splatoon throughout the summer and fall. Players can look forward to the Rainmaker Ranked Battle mode, additional maps and new weapons.

The latest issue of Famitsu has a massive Splatoon interview. Producer Hisashi Nogami, art director Seita Inoue, designer Keisuke Nishimori, sound director Toru Minegishi, and sound composer Yuki Tsuji spoke with the magazine. That’s a lot of developers indeed!

During one point of the discussion, Inoue and Nishimori spoke about how the Inkling design centered around the girl at first.

They said:

“The main emphasis was on the girl, to the extent that we thought at first whether it would be alright to not have a boy (laughs).” – Inoue

“When having a chance to design a new character, there is the fact that it’s rare to have a girl lead in a Nintendo title and also having a strong and active female may make it easier to become accepted overseas. The design was centered on the girl at first, and then the design of a boy was thought of in comparison.” – Nishimori

Famitsu interviewed Valhalla Game Studios’ Tomonobu Itagaki in one of its recent issues. Today, Itagaki posted the entire transcript in English for all to see.

We’ve picked out a few highlights below. Those include the game’s lengthy development, the process of getting the game on Wii U, and more.

Let’s Talk #16: Most anticipated Wii U games

There are still plenty of Wii U games to look forward to. From Nintendo alone, the company is bringing us Zelda Wii U, Super Mario Maker, Star Fox Zero, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (Genei Ibun Roku #FE), Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi’s Woolly World (in North America), Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, Devil’s Third, Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. There are also a smattering of third-party offerings like Rodea: The Sky Soldier, LEGO Dimensions, Disney Infinity 3.0, Skylanders SuperChargers, and Guitar Hero Live. It goes without saying that there’s still a ton of indie content on the way as well.

All of that being said, is there one Wii U game that you’re looking forward to above all else? If you can’t pick one, what are your top highlights? Let us know in the comments below!

Right now there are three games I’ve been wanting to get my hands on above all else. Let me briefly talk about each.

– Zelda Wii U: it’s Zelda! This series is what really motivated me to pay more attention to video games. Even though I had played games before, going through Ocarina of Time is when my interest really spiked. I was disappointed when Nintendo announced Zelda Wii U’s delay to 2016, but we should be getting a fantastic title in the end.

– Xenoblade Chronicles X: honestly, I do wish this one had already launched in the west at this point. That original January 2013 trailer feels like so long ago. Still, Xenoblade Chronicles X should be worth the wait. Xenoblade ended up as one of my favorite games of all time, and while X should be a fairly different experience, I’m anticipating that there will be enough there to make it both familiar and new at the same time.

– Super Mario Maker: after Nintendo showed this game at last year’s E3, I was mildly interested. I knew I’d pick it up eventually, but it wasn’t something where I thought I needed it at launch. My opinion changed greatly following Super Mario Maker’s showing at E3 2015. I’m just amazed by the amount of crazy things you can do inside different levels. I’ll be playing other creations rather than making them myself, so I can’t wait to see what people come up with.
