Dragon Ball FighterZ

The new Switch version of Dragon Ball FighterZ was given a September 27 release date in Japan earlier this week. In the west, Bandai Namco just confirmed that the game is launching on September 28. That date has been confirmed for both North America and Europe.

Those who pick up Dragon Ball FighterZ on Switch will be able to purchase all the extra characters already released on other platforms from day one. By pre-ordering the game, you’ll be given two gifts:

Mario Tennis Aces

This week’s North American Nintendo Downloads are as follows:

Switch Retail

de Blob – $29.99 (available June 26)
Mario Tennis Aces – $59.99 (available June 22)
Minecraft – $29.99
MUSYNX – $26.99
Vegas Party – $24.99
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana – $59.99 (available June 26)

More data is in from this month’s NPD report.

On the Switch hardware front, the Neon Switch was the month’s best-selling hardware SKU. That applies to both both unit and dollar sales.

That’s not the only good news for Nintendo. Switch software sales in May generated growth of 90% when compared to a year ago, which is the highest software revenues for any Nintendo platform in May since the Wii in May 2011. This is without digital sales since NPD does not track digital sales on Nintendo platforms.

Animal Crossing

At every E3 – or any major Nintendo event for that matter – many fans hope to see the announcement of games like Animal Crossing for Switch or the western release of Mother 3. There still wasn’t news on either of these last week, but Nintendo is definitely aware of the interest.

IGN spoke with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime at E3. As a blanket statement regarding announcements for the company’s franchises, Reggie reiterated that information will be shared “close to its launch date versus teasing people for years on end.”

Nintendo’s longstanding battle with piracy has been well documented. Piracy was a huge issue in particular on DS, but also continued with its subsequent systems.

With Switch, Nintendo is taking serious anti-piracy measures. Reports in the modding and hacking scene indicate that the company has started banning particular gamecart certificates. In other words, Nintendo can go after games that have been illegally obtained by conducting a check between certificates and game cards.

Some folks are naturally wondering what may happen with the pre-owned market and pre-owned games. Since we only have early information and the situation is developing, not everything is clear at the moment.

Masahiro Sakurai

Following the reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate last week, director Masahiro Sakurai wrote a new article for this week’s issue of Famitsu. This is one of his first columns about the new game included in the magazine.

In it, Sakurai talks about how the first proposal came about in late 2015, the game’s faster tempo, and much more. He also touched on how it was decided to build off of past mechanics, which in turn allowed for a larger roster.

We’ve prepared a full translation of the column below.

EA announced and subsequently released Unravel Two at its E3 press conference last week. After the news was shared, many were quick to point out that it would be a fit on Switch, especially thanks to the co-op play feature.

Creator Martin Sahlin previously mentioned that Unravel Two “would be great on Switch”, but it would take “a lot of work”. A couple of the game’s other developers have spoke about those challenges in depth.
