Mario Tennis Aces

Just a short while ago, Nintendo issued a new general Switch trailer for its European audience. In case you missed it, you can view it here.

Towards the end of the video, we’re shown a family playing Mario Tennis Aces. And although it only lasts for a couple of seconds, we’re able to get a look at a character select screen. That screen contains a new playable character: Spike.

Double Cross

13AM Games, the developer behind Runbow, has unveiled its next project. Double Cross is coming to Switch this summer, the studio announced today.

Double Cross is an action-adventure game with plenty of platforming. You’ll play as Zahra, an agent of the dimension peacekeepers RIFT (otherwise known as Regulators of Interdimensional Frontiers and Technology). After RIFT is attacked, players will be involved in a new case as they travel across dimensions. The game has unlockable gear, a “Proton Slinger” mechanic that offers a diversity of movement in levels and the ability to grab and throw objects and enemies, upgradeable attacks and combos, and more.

If you’re at PAX East 2018 this week, you can try out Double Cross out for the first time. We have the first full details and trailer below.

System: Switch
Release date: April 3, 2018
Developer: Nippon Ichi
Publisher: NIS America

Penny-Punching Princess checks all the right boxes in things I love: it’s got arcade-inspired gameplay in which you’ll brawl your way through dungeons (or castles) in a level, a section by section format that is reminiscent of classics like Double Dragon or Streets of Rage, a simple light and heavy attack button that you can mix and match for combos, and a very straight-forward approach in how to complete each level. Racking up points and cash so you can bribe, upgrade, and loot your way to victory is also an intriguing element, and the adorable pixel art style looks nice. However, all of the enjoyment is quickly interrupted thanks to non-intuitive controls, uninspired levels, repetitive gameplay, and a story that’s so banal and aimless you’ll find yourself either falling asleep to the dialogue or skipping the text entirely.

Two of Nintendo’s developers attended GDC 2018 to deliver presentations about their Switch games. Hisashi Nogami and Kosuke Yabuki, the producers of Splatoon 2 and ARMS respectively, were both on hand.

At GDC, Nintendo caught up with Nogami and Yabuki to talk about GDC, their presentations, and more. You can read the full interview below.

April Fools’ Day can be a tricky thing. Sometimes you aren’t quite sure what is and what isn’t true, but a new announcement made by Nintendo today is apparently being considered the real deal. We’ll let you know if we hear otherwise.

For Splatoon 2, a collaboration with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has been announced. As one part of this, a new Splatfest will be held on April 21. Players will be asked: “Which makes you feel the most wonder? Unknown/undiscovered creatures vs. advanced technology”.

A soundtrack for Super Mario Odyssey was recently offered in Japan. Aside from including several discs and stickers, it also contained a special booklet with concept art focused on Pauline – see below. We’re also able to get insight into Nintendo’s thinking for the character.

Mayor Pauline usually wears a pants suit. But when she is singing Jump Up, Super Star!, she wears a gorgeous dress which excites the usually cool New Donkers. Pauline is a character with history, so while keeping her original traits intact, Nintendo made a new design for her which fits the world setting of Super Mario Odyssey. The team solidified her image by drawing rough sketches of her various costumes, although they don’t appear in the game.

Nintendo tends to be quiet regarding its E3 plans until the show is rather close, but this year, the company shared some news pretty early. Last week, it was announced that Super Smash Bros. Switch and Splatoon 2 will both be seeing their own tournaments.

Polygon spoke with Nintendo’s Bill Trinen about the Super Smash Bros. Invitational 2018 and Splatoon 2 World Championship. Trinen noted the following:

Pokemon has been an incredibly successful franchise since the beginning. Even after 20 years, the franchise is still going strong.

During a recent media event, Valve boss Gabe Newell actually spoke about Pokemon while discussing the company’s future plans. Here’s what Newell said about the IP’s longstanding success:
