System: Switch
Release date: July 21, 2017
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher Nintendo

One of the best things about the original Splatoon when it first rolled onto store shelves a few years back was how it was never afraid to be itself. When creating a new IP, Nintendo didn’t choose to play it safe and instead provided completely new gameplay we had never seen before and a booming world to dive into like no other. It’s no wonder fans took an immediate liking to the concept, and throughout its near two years of support, players kept coming back. It makes perfect sense that Nintendo rolled out a sequel just in time for the Switch’s first year to put a “fresh” IP in the spotlight once again, but does this sequel provide enough to justify the 2, or does it provide “2” little?

Nintendo’s support site has updated with plenty of details about the new Nintendo Switch Online FAQ. Along with a FAQ, pages are up explaining how you create and join rooms. We’ve rounded all of the information up below.

Overview:

The Nintendo Switch Online app is available for iOS and Android devices.

The app is currently compatible with the Splatoon 2 game, giving players the ability to access SplatNet 2, invite friends to online matches, and voice chat during various game modes. Both the app’s functionality and online play are free, where available, until the Nintendo Switch Online service launches in 2018.

With the app and the Splatoon 2 game, you can access SplatNet 2 to see your online play stats, check out upcoming game stages, and more.

You can also invite friends who have the game to Private Battles, League Battles, Salmon Runs, and Splatfest Battles via social media and other services. When players are invited to a game, they’ll get an instant notification on their smart device.

The app lets you chat with friends in your Splatoon 2 online lobby and then talk to your teammates to coordinate strategy during the online match.

Features & Usage

How do I use the Nintendo Switch Online app to create an online match and voice chat with other players?

For instructions on how to complete this process, click here.

Can I invite anyone or just friends to play online and chat?

When creating rooms and inviting users, you can invite friends you have from Nintendo Switch, friends you communicate with over social media or messaging apps, and other users you have recently played with through the Nintendo Switch Online app.

In addition to this, users must be age 13 years of age of older to use the Nintendo Switch Online app.

If you would like to change devices, you can sign into a new device using your Nintendo Account. If I use my smart device’s other features (texts, social media, etc.) will I be disconnected?

The voice chat will disconnect while you’re talking on the phone or using another application, but your voice chat will restart in the same room once you open the Nintendo Switch Online application again as long as the game session is still ongoing.

The Nintendo Switch Online app looks to be launching slightly early. Nintendo had intended to release it alongside Splatoon 2 on Friday, but it’s already appearing around the world.

For folks on iOS in the United States, it’s up on the App Store here. The Google Play equivalent is here. The Nintendo Switch Online app is also being distributed across the rest of the world.

You can download the app, though servers are currently undergoing maintenance. It should hopefully be fully live soon.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Ubisoft delivered its latest financial results today. Following that, the regular investors call was held with CEO Yves Guillemot.

Yves shared an interesting tease during the call. We know that Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is slated for next month, but the publisher will also be announcing new Switch games “quite soon,” according to Yves. Nothing else was shared beyond that.

Ubisoft released Just Dance 2017 for Switch’s launch in March. The company is also preparing the previously-mentioned Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition, Monopoly, Just Dance 2018, and (supposedly) Steep.

Today, GamesIndustry published a new interview with a couple of people involved with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Director Davide Soliani and composer Grant Kirkhope participated in the discussion.

During the interview, Kirkhope talked about first finding out about the game, also shared an… interesting story about an encounter with Shigeru Miyamoto from his time at Rare. Soliani also talked about being starstruck with Kirkhpoe, worries stemming from the initial leaks, and the game’s inspirations.

You can find that and a bit more below. You can read up on GamesIndustry’s full piece here for additional comments.

Miiverse

Miiverse launched with Wii U back in 2012. It expanded to 3DS in later years, but the service as a whole could be coming to an end soon.

As we reported earlier, Nintendo pushed out a new update for Wii U tonight. We don’t really have any specifics, though dataminers appear to have made an interesting discovery.

This text was apparently changed with version 5.5.2:

“The Miiverse service has ended. Miiverse and any software features that make use of Miiverse are now unavailable.”

Miiverse isn’t a part of Switch at all, so it wouldn’t be entirely surprising to see the service end at some point soon. Some community members likely wouldn’t be too happy though.

Nintendo’s older console just received a new update. All system owners can download version 5.5.2.

The update notes haven’t been exciting for Wii U in awhile, and nothing really changed this time either. Nintendo simply states, “Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience”. The update may address certain exploits within the hardware.

Note that you’ll need today’s update in order to access the eShop.

The Switch stock situation isn’t so great around the world. But if you thought it was difficult finding a system in the west, you should be thankful that you’re not living in Japan. We’ve reported how crazy things can get with people lining up just for a chance to get a Switch. The insanity was taken to new heights this weekend.

We have a few different pieces of site news to discuss. Let’s get right to it!

News position openings

We have two news positions open on the site at the moment. The first one is a higher priority, but if we can find someone capable of handling the second position as well though, that’d also be great.

– 5 PM ET – 9 PM ET
– 10 PM in the UK – 2 AM in the UK

We’ll take things from there. When sending in the email, please specify which position you’re going for.

Advertising

I wanted to make it absolutely clear that we don’t accept pop-up ads on Nintendo Everything. They’ve not been approved to run in any capacity. However, we’ve been hearing some feedback that redirects / pop-ups have become an issue on mobile for some users.

If you do encounter these types of ads – be it on mobile or PC – or any other intrusive advertising, please send in an email through our contact form here (select “Advertising”). If you can, provide us with the following:

– Your region (USA, etc.)
– The device you’re on
– URL of the ad
– Screenshot of the ad

We don’t want these ads here as much as you do, and they’re always a nightmare for us to deal with. Some of you have worked with us in the past in eliminating troublesome ads. We’ll always do our best to swiftly take care of similar situations in the future.

Survey

It’s been a long while since we last hosted a survey for Nintendo Everything’s readers. If you have a few minutes to spare, please answer a few questions here. None are mandatory, so you can skip anything you’re not interested in responding to. We appreciate your feedback in advance!

MCV recently chatted with Level-5 Abby’s director of games marketing Lucy Pozniak. Pozniak spoke about the upcoming Layton’s Mystery Journey as well as Switch.

First, about the new star Katrielle, Pozniak noted:

“We have a new hero, [Layton’s daughter] Katrielle, who’s opening up her detective agency. In addition, whereas previous titles have had bigger, more overarching story puzzles or a main mystery to solve, this one is broken into 12 chapters and it’s about solving different mysteries within those chapters.”

Layton’s Mystery Journey won’t just be on 3DS. The game is actually debuting on mobile first – July 20 worldwide. However, the experience will ultimately be the same regardless of the device you’re playing on, Pozniak said.
