Dark Souls: Remastered

It took a few months longer than originally expected, but Dark Souls: Remastered has finally arrived on Switch. Digital Foundry has taken a closer look at the game from a technical perspective in a new video published today.

One thing to keep in mind is that Dark Souls for Switch is based on the last-gen version. That means it doesn’t feature the higher frame rate as the newer PlayStation 4 / Xbox One editions or their visual improvements. As Digital Foundry describes it, Dark Souls on Switch is the “authentic” version presented as it was many years ago.

Nintendo Switch

Another round of Nintendo maintenance is planned for the coming week. Switch, the eShops, and more will be impacted during certain periods.

The current schedule is as follows:

Nintendo updated a handful of child’s safety certificates for various Smash Bros. amiibo this month. These include Sheik, Captain Falcon, Wii Fit Trainer, Marth, Jigglypuff, Charizard, Lucario, Zelda, and Peach. Aside from Peach, each figure has an additional September 2018 manufacturing run listed.

Often with these certificate updates, it’s a sign that restocks are on the horizon. Keep an eye out for the aforementioned figures making a return to retailers in the near future.

When SNK 40th Anniversary Collection makes it to Switch next month, it’ll be accompanied by a limited edition. NIS America shared an image this week that showcases the package’s full contents. Buyers will receive SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, a “Nostalgic Music Collection” soundtrack, art book, and collector’s box.

NIS America is still taking pre-orders for the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection Limited Edition on its website here. It’s due out on November 13.

CyberConnect2 first started the Little Tail Bronx series with Tail Concerto on the PlayStation back in 1998. Then in 2010, Solatorobo: Red the Hunter came to DS. Fuga on the Battlefield will see the franchise return once again next summer.

Notice a pattern here? There’s about a decade long wait in between titles. In an interview with Anime News Network, CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama explained why it takes so long for new games to be released, stating:

Usually when you think of Minecraft, you think of a game that can be played by anyone regardless of their age. Generally speaking, it’s a family-friendly experience. Yet for Minecraft: Story Mode, the original plan was something a bit different.

According to former Telltale narrative designer Emily Grace Buck, what was originally created “was not appropriate for young kids.” In fact, had the company moved forward with what it had, the ESRB would have given the project a T-rating. Buck didn’t elaborate beyond this as to what Telltale had originally created.

Having a rival is one of the more well-known aspects in Pokemon. This has been present in the original generation of games, leading all the way up through Pokemon Sun/Moon. But over time, their personality has changed. Early on especially, rivals acted more like jerks. That isn’t as much the case anymore – especially with the likes of Hau in Sun/Moon.

In an interview with GameSpot, longtime Pokemon developer Junichi Masuda spoke about the shift. He noted how back in the day, you couldn’t express quite as much with visuals meaning they really needed to have character with their dialogue and personality. On the other hand, with the HD visuals of today, making the rival a jerk would leave much more of an impression on players.

Mega Man 11

The Mega Man 11 game Capcom shipped a few weeks ago wasn’t always the original plan for the game. In an interview with producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya and Rockman Unity’s Ucchi, it’s revealed that something else entirely was planned.

What did Capcom originally have in mind? While we may not have the answer to that now, we may know one day. Tsuchiya says he hopes that the idea he had in mind will “be released in another form eventually”.
