Iwata: “We just don’t care too much about what other companies are doing or are trying to do”

Satoru Iwata isn’t worrying about the competition, even with new next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft on the way. He put it succinctly to CNN in a new interview: “We just don’t care too much about what other companies are doing or are trying to do.”
Iwata said that Nintendo is busy thinking about creating new ideas that can’t be recreated on other hardware. Nintendo also wants to put emphasis on experiences that can only be experienced on Nintendo platforms.
“We just don’t care too much about what other companies are doing or are trying to do. Our primary focus is to think about and actually carry out something which other company’s hardware can never realize. We are trying to provide consumers gaming experiences that can only be available on Nintendo platforms. Software sells hardware. The number of hardware selling and the number of people who can experience the unique attractions of the Wii U are going to increase, and thereby the knowledge and the understanding about the Wii U system shall naturally expand.”
Nintendo and the Wii U will certainly have a heck of a lot of competition this holiday. Sony will launch the PlayStation 4 while Microsoft will put out the Xbox One.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sales already at 200,000 in North America

Animal Crossing: New Leaf has come out of the gate strong in North America. Nintendo wrote on Facebook yesterday that the game’s community has reached 200,000 players – that translates to 200,000 units in sales.
Level-5 teasing something North American related with new website

Level-5 published a new teaser site today. But whereas you may be expecting it to be Japanese-related, the page actually comes from the company’s North American branch. That likely means some kind of localization announcement is on the way.
The website currently houses a door. Click it, and you’ll be shown that another door hidden inside. Click several more times and you should see a magnifying glass appear. If you click once more on the doorknob, you’ll come across the image above.
I’m inclined to think that Level-5 is teasing Layton Brothers: Mystery Room – an iOS game – but we won’t know for sure until an official announcement is made.
E3 2013 attended by nearly 50,000 people

Nearly 50,000 people with video game-ties showed up at E3 2013 this past week. The ESA has announced that 48,200 video game industry professionals, investor analysts, journalists, and retailers from 102 countries were at the expo.
28,000 total hotel room nights were generated from E3 visits and Los Angeles profited from close to $40 million in revenue. Roughly 230 exhibitors displayed content.
Not a bad E3 for the ESA!
Atlus would be wary of female lead in numbered Shin Megami Tensei game due to traditionalists

Numbered Shin Megami Tensei games have never featured female leads. Could Atlus be open to making a change in the future?
Shin Megami Tensei IV character designer Masayuki Doi is personally a fan of highlighting a female lead in a mainline Shin Megami Tensei title. Doi did explain, however, that some longtime players could be opposed to that kind of move.
“I like female protagonists. It would be cool to have a female protagonist in the next SMT game.”
“However, there are traditionalists that see the series from the past to present and all of the protagonists have been male. To keep that tradition, there is feedback I’ve been hearing saying that if there is a new SMT title we should keep the tradition of having a male lead.”
