Nintendo’s activities at today’s E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles included the announcement of a remake of a classic Mario & Luigi game and the crowning of the winning team in the 2017 Splatoon 2 World Inkling Invitational.

Following a morning packed with new announcements, the Nintendo Treehouse: Live at E3 show included in-depth play-throughs of a variety of games for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS systems. During the show, Nintendo announced that an updated version of the first game in the Mario & Luigi series was in development for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. This information comes from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime…

“Our focus is making sure we launch great games — making sure that we continue to support not only Nintendo Switch, but also the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles. f we do our jobs with great games as well as making sure there’s enough hardware out in the marketplace, then the stock price will take care of itself.”

“Our demographic is much wider. We want consumers from 5 to 95 playing our games. And by doing that we go down a path that makes our IP much more accessible. We’re much more family-friendly. We have a range of content for the most core gamer to a child who is wanting to get into gaming for the first time. So it’s a different approach for us, and that approach is winning.”

“We are fortunate that we have had a series of phenomenons. Whether it’s been Pokemon Go, or our NES classic that we launched last holiday season, and now Nintendo Switch. What we want to do is create these games and these new executions that the consumers feel they absolutely have to go buy.”

Bandai Namco has announced a new arcade featuring virtual reality gaming. It’s planned to open in Tokyo next month. Bandai Namco will be opening VR Zone arcades overseas as well starting with in London this summer.

The big news here is that Mario Kart Arcade GP VR will be one of the supported games. The Japan Times reports:

“… there have been driving games based on Nintendo Co.’s popular “Mario Kart” game series at regular arcades in the past.

But unlike driving while watching the action through a monitor, players using 3-D headsets will feel like they are actually driving Mario’s go-kart in a fantasy world.

Moreover, because the players wear devices that give them a sense of touch, they can actually pick up virtual turtle shells or banana skins that appear on the track and throw them at other players — action that is popular with “Mario Kart” aficionados.”

Mario Kart Arcade GP VR will be played using the HTC Vive. Nintendo isn’t developing the game specifically, but this is a pretty interesting development nonetheless.

Well, this certainly came out of nowhere: Nintendo (specifically, Nintendo Co, Ltd) has grabbed a trademark for “Awazon no Hihou”, which is the subtitle of the Japanese version of the Virtual Boy Wario Land game. In addition, they also trademarked “DS Kondate Zenshuu”, which is the subtitle of the Japan-only Nintendo DS cooking sim Kenkou Ouen Recipe 1000.

The timing is obviously peculiar since E3 is currently going on, but remember that this doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Nintendo registers new trademarks and renews old ones constantly, so don’t take this as a confirmation of a Virtual Boy Virtual Console or something.
