General Nintendo

The Game Awards 2023 happened this week, and we want to know what you thought about the show.

If you’re a Switch-only owner, you may have been disappointed by the announcements. There was some news for the platform here and there such as Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, but many of the titles were for other platforms. Some have a good chance at ending up on Switch eventually such as World of Goo 2, but we’ll have to wait and see. Also, Nintendo itself has been at The Game Awards in the past with both big and small announcements, but this was one of those years in which it chose not to bring anything.

As for the actual awards, Nintendo did get some wins in that department. However, for Game of the Year, that went to Baldur’s Gate 3 rather than Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Super Mario Bros. Wonder. You can catch up on all of the winners here.

How do you feel about The Game Awards this year? What did you think of the announcements and winners? Anything related to the event is fair game, so let us know in the comments.

Playable Zelda

Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma already shared a few words earlier this year on what it’ll take for Zelda to become playable, and he’s not commented on the possibility again.

Of course, as fans know, Link has taken the center spotlight in The Legend of Zelda even though the princess herself is often involved with the story. You can play as her in titles like Spirit Tracks and Hyrule Warriors, but that’s not exactly what some have been asking for.

Zelda timeline Hidemaro Fujibayashi

Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Eiji Aonuma, who has served as the director on Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, has shared general thoughts about the Zelda timeline and how much Nintendo thinks about it.

The timeline has long been a topic of discussion for fans, but there have been times when Nintendo has been coy about it. When asked by Game Informer how much consideration and importance Nintendo gives it, Fujibayashi said it’s “something that the development team recognizes and it considers, but to an extent.” This is because focusing on it way much can put restraints on creativity.

Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo cancelled

Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo will no longer be happening due to “persistent threats” made against employees as well as participants.

Nintendo Live was once again set to take place in Japan in January. The event would have offered the same sort of standard activities we’ve seen over the past few years, including tournaments and concerts. Unfortunately, the plug has been pulled entirely.

Zelda movie director Wes Ball

Wes Ball, the director of the upcoming movie based on The Legend of Zelda, has commented on what he’s going for with the film, saying that he’s aiming for “a live-action Miyazaki.” Hayao Miyazaki is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and led the way on acclaimed animated films such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro.

Ball spoke to EW about the project while he oversees postproduction on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He said his vision is “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”

Wapeach

Fumihide Aoki, who was the designer behind Waluigi, today shared concept art and other images of Wapeach, a character who was originally intended to be in Mario Tennis. The shots were posted on social media.

What might be most interesting of all is that the sketches above were actually made during Mario Power Tennis. Wapeach has ties to the original Mario Tennis, but Aoki said she only had a name when the N64 title was being developed and nothing further. He added that he’s unsure why the design was ultimately scrapped.

Super Mario RPG Wario, Three Musketeers

Jiro Mifune, who was one of the developers on Super Mario RPG when it originally came out on the SNES, has revealed a bunch of sketches that were created at the time including a concept for Three Musketeers, Wario, and much more.

Mifune wrote on social media that the project was made by staff in their early twenties. He said that Square “was a development style in which game planning and design ideas were shared among the entire staff,” suggesting that many people were able to contribute.

Mother 3 localization Shigesato Itoi

EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi recently shared a few words about fan requests for a Mother 3 localization in English. Itoi shared a few words about the game in the Earthbound, USA documentary that was just released this week.

He started out by mentioning how he’d “love for people in the U.S. to play Mother 3.” Nintendo was apparently offered the fan translation to use, but it “wasn’t quite as simple as that.”

Itoi said:
