Along with today’s screenshot, Sakurai passed along the following messages on Miiverse, including some new gameplay details:

Pic of the day. There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario’s grab.

Some other changes include:

– Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
– Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.

Capcom has announced a new compilation of the original Ace Attorney games for 3DS.

Ace Attorney 123 Wright Selection, according to this week’s Famitsu, bundles the first three entries in the series. 3D visuals will be supported. This Japanese release also includes English voices.

Tatsurou Iwamoto will design the boxart for Capcom’s new compilation, Famitsu confirms.

Ace Attorney 123 Naruhodo Selection is due out in Japan on April 17. Pricing is set at 3,990 yen. A limited edition and new drama CD – featuring Phoenix, Miles Edgeworth, and Godot – will also be available. And those who pre-order will obtain original wallpaper artwork and arranged versions of Ace Attorney’s BGM.

Update: Bumped to the top of the page. We have the following tweets from Nintendo of America’s Twitter account:

Pokemon Bank has finally returned to the Japanese 3DS eShop. Earlier this month, the app was pulled following extensive downtime affecting Nintendo’s online services. Perhaps this is a sign that we’ll be seeing Pokemon Bank in the west soon as well?

The 3DS homebrew scene seems to be picking up, with well-known hacker “Smealum” providing a first look at the ability to load software through a custom channel.

“This video is a glimpse at what I want for the up and coming 3DS homebrew scene, i.e. a way for people to make their own homebrew applications and install so that they’re directly accessible from home menu.

This has a number of advantages over running code ‘on the bare metal’ as some are already doing. For one thing, it means that homebrew code will be strictly limited to user mode code, the same way commercial games and applications are, which drastically lowers the likelihood of anyone’s (*cough*Gateway*cough*) code accidentally bricking your console.

For another, it means that our code will be able to interface with every service provided by the 3DS’s OS; it’ll make stuff like FS, wifi, and GPU access much easier. And of course, it just looks cool having your own channel in the menu, and being able to return to menu and switch between games instantly is a nice plus.”

There are a few caveats to keep in mind, naturally. For one thing, it only works with with v4.1-4.5 firmware. It’ll also be a little while before the method is made available publicly.

Smealum said of the hack’s release:

“There’s no telling how long it’ll take to get a safe package ready for mass consumption; users have already suffered through enough bricks, I’d rather my software didn’t add to the list. So sit tight ! We’ll have nice 3DS homebrew soon enough.”

Playism Games and NIGORO have just launched a Kickstarter for La-Mulana 2. The game was originally announced during TGS 2013 back in September, though there hasn’t been much news until now.

Here’s the official La-Mulana 2 overview posted on Kickstarter:

Renegade Kid has confirmed that an announcement for its upcoming 3DS first-person shooter will be made on Friday.

In a strange turn of events, it would seem that Gateway’s 3DS flash cards are bricking systems when users attempt to modify a particular file on the device. Basically, the piracy-enabling technology is attempting to prevent itself from being pirated. Yep, strange.

There have been plenty of reports about the situation over on the GBATemp forums, which have picked up due to the recent region-lock workaround discovery. 3DS owners who have modified a file within Gateway’s device appear to activate a “kill switch”, corrupting the 3DS’ NAND flash memory and leaving them with a dead handhanld.

Here’s what Gateway is saying about the situation:

Nintendo is facing some tough times at the moment. Wii U isn’t selling like the company had hoped, forecasts have been slashed, and its shares are falling.

In light of these circumstances, analysts and others will continue to say that Nintendo should put its IPs on smart devices. Nintendo, though, is sticking to its guns.

During a news conference last Friday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reaffirmed the hardware manufacturer’s commitment to consoles, and indicated that we won’t be seeing Mario on smartphones anytime soon.

“The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles. It’s not that simple. It doesn’t mean that we should put Mario on smartphones.”

Iwata added that Nintendo must determine how to best use smartphones so that consumers become aware of its games.
