NEO: The World Ends with You

The World Ends with You has been relatively dormant for over a decade, but Square Enix is now starting to make a bigger push with the IP. An anime based on the original game just recently started airing and a long-awaited sequel will finally launch this summer after more than a decade.

Fans will be happy to hear that the series has a bright future ahead. IGN recently asked NEO: The World Ends with You producer Tomohiko Hirano if the team hopes it can become its own series, similar to Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. In response, Hirano said:

Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition

System: Switch
Release date: April 15, 2021
Developer: Chibig
Publisher: Chibig

Summer in Mara was one of the more recent games that took me by surprise in terms of how much I enjoyed it, as I really love the sense of serenity it offers with a small but playful map that gives just enough to keep things consistently fun – especially for the explorative types. Though Chibig is no stranger to game development, it was the first of their portfolio to hit consoles, and while the Switch version had a few quirks, it still retained what was most important without having to sacrifice much outside of some visual quality. Deiland may be new to some, but the game has technically been out since Chibig brought it to mobile in 2016. Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition on Switch now marks the third time it has been released, but as someone who’s played it briefly on mobile and then on PC just before the Switch version for the purposes of this review, this would also mark the third time Deiland has simply been… Deiland, with little between releases to feel like a sizeable update or enhancement from prior SKUs.

Nintendo Switch

The annual “State of the Game Industry” GDC report was published this week, and it provides the latest insight into developers and their approach to Switch.

Overall responses are comparable to 2020. For instance, 38 percent of developers polled said they’re interested in Switch – whereas that figure was 37 percent last year. 17 percent of respondents said their current project is planned for the console – which hasn’t changed at all.

Below are all of the relevant results:

Over the past few years, Nintendo has started to stress the importance of its IPs beyond just video games. That’s what’s led to things like Super Nintendo World and the upcoming animated movie based on Mario.

The good news is that if you only care about games, Nintendo has looked to ensure that development resources aren’t impacted. President Shuntaro Furukawa told Fast Company:

A new month rolled right on in today. Now that we’re in May, we want to know what you’ve been playing.

Have you started up the just-released New Pokemon Snap? How about other recent titles like SaGa Frontier Remastered or FEZ? No matter the case, let us know in the comments below.

Despite Nintendo’s wide variety of franchises, the company hasn’t done much with movies. There was the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, but that’s pretty much it.

Although it’s taken a few decades, Nintendo is finally experimenting with movies once again. An animated Mario film will debut in 2022 thanks to a collaboration with Illumination.

NEO: The World Ends with You

The World Ends with You first debuted on DS way back in 2007 (2008 in the west). Since then, Square Enix hasn’t done much with the IP. We’ve seen ports and things like character cameos in Kingdom Hearts, but there hasn’t been a new game – until now.

NEO: The World Ends with You, the next entry in the series, will finally release this summer. Producer Tomohiko Hirano spoke about the long wait for a new entry, telling IGN:

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

The first Ni no Kuni made it to Switch in 2019. Its sequel, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, could now be on the way as well.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom was rated for Nintendo’s console today by the ESRB. It’s “The Prince’s Edition”, which suggests that the season pass DLC will be included.

New Pokemon Snap

This week’s North American Nintendo Downloads are as follows:

Despite not being announced previously, SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off has just landed on Switch. Titling Point first launched the game on mobile, and while it’s largely the same on Nintendo’s console, the developer says it’s been “re-designed” and features four new power-ups.
