Yesterday’s Famitsu scans featured quite an extensive look at Monster Hunter X. Most of the focus was on monster variants which are, well, variants of existing monsters with different looks and behavior patterns. Adam Evanko AKA Gaijinhunter took an in-depth look at the Famitsu scans in a video which you can find below, but here’s a small overview of the monster variants detailed in the magazine:

  • Darkflame Rathalos: lots of airtime and new breath attacks
  • Deadly Princess Rathian: focuses on poison attacks
  • Crimson Bear Arzuros: characteristic red mane, powerful attacks with his arms
  • Fortress Daimyo: high defense, hard to crack
  • Bouldercrusher Tetsucabra: berserk, powerful jaw attacks
  • Whitegale Nargacuga: really fast, shoots shockwaves when it attacks
  • Gold Thunder Zinoger: has undergone an “awakening” and now has powerful homing lightning attacks

Okay, so full disclosure: Rhythm Heaven is probably my favourite Nintendo-published series if not my flat-out favourite game series of all time. For me the core gameplay clicked immediately with the cute and creative minigames that make up the series proving to be a brilliant way to test players’ musical abilities. You could sell me a Rhythm Heaven game that was 75% old content and I’d still eat it up. And that just so happens to be what Nintendo have done this time. The currently Japan-exclusive Rhythm Heaven The Best+ brings rhythm games from the previous three entries in the series to the 3DS along with a handful of new games and some structural changes. It’s a solid compilation of the series’ highs, even if there’s a sense that the developers didn’t quite get why Rhythm Heaven is “the best”.

This week’s Famitsu scans are now available. Highlighted games include Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, Monster Hunter X, and Project X Zone 2. Scans of each title can be found in the gallery below.

Two Puzzle & Dragons games have already hit the 3DS, and it looks like a third one is in the works. This month’s issue of CoroCoro reveals that GungHo Online Entertainment is preparing a new title in the series for Nintendo’s handheld.

We don’t actually have any concrete news about the project just yet, though there’s some speculation flying around that it’s a sequel to Puzzle & Dragons Z. The only thing we have to go on currently is the cover from CoroCoro. Maybe the new Puzzle & Dragons game is something that will be touched upon during tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct?

Update 2: Bumped to the top again. The Nintendo Direct has now been confirmed for Japan, and it’s airing at the same time. Nintendo says it will focus on Wii U and 3DS games launching by the end of next spring. Morimoto, who hosted the presentation at the end of May, will lead the way on this one as well.

Update: No real surprise here, but the North American page states: “Please note that the presentation will not feature any updates on NX and mobile.”

Nintendo Direct is making a triumphant return later this week. Today, Nintendo announced that the next broadcast is set for Thursday. The presentation will cover upcoming Wii U and 3DS games.

Satoru Shibata will host the European presentation. It’s unclear who will lead the North American version, though Reggie Fils-Aime and/or Bill Trinen are likely candidates.

Here’s when the new Nintendo Direct will air:

– 2 PM PT
– 5 PM ET
– 10 PM in the UK
– 11 PM in Europe
