Philips wins patent case against Nintendo in UK

Reuters is reporting that Philips Electronics has won a patent infringement case against Nintendo in the UK. It’s the first of four lawsuits filed against Nintendo.
In a statement, Philips spokesman Bjorn Teuwsen said:
“It’s about a patent for motion, gesture and pointing control that we make available to manufacturers of set-top boxes and games consoles through a licensing program. We’d been trying to come to a licensing agreement with Nintendo since 2011, but since it didn’t work out we started legal action in Germany and the UK in 2012, France in 2013 and in the U.S. last month. We’ve requested fair compensation for the use of our patents.”
Philips did not share information regarding possible financial implications from the ruling.
Thanks to Joachim for the tip.
Aonuma reflects on Zelda: Skyward Sword’s tutorials, will be careful with them going forward

One of the more common complaints with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword concerned the game’s tutorials. Many felt that there were too many of them, especially at the beginning.
This is something that series producer Eiji Aonuma has learned from. Aonuma told Kotaku that he now understands “that when you go out and buy a game, you buy the game because you want to play it, and you don’t want to have any obstacles in the way.” Additionally, he admitted that Skyward Sword’s tutorials were “frontloaded”.
Aonuma said this was all “a real learning experience for me”, and he’ll “be careful not to do that.”
May 2014 NPD: Estimated Wii U sales

This month’s NPD report is in, and so are the leaks. “creamsugar”, a member of NeoGAF known for sharing NPD data, has provided a rough breakdown of sales for each platform:
200k > PS4 > 100k > XBO > Wii U > 360 > 50k > PS3 > Wii
It’ll be more interesting to see how Wii U performs next month. Mario Kart 8 launched at the very end of May, meaning it didn’t have an absolutely major impact in last month’s NPD report. June will be much more noteworthy to examine!

Federal appeals court confirms Nintendo win against patent troll in case involving Wii
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii | 5 Comments
In 2010, Triton Tech filed a lawsuit against Nintendo, claiming that the Wii Remote controller infringed one of the company’s patents. But on Friday, a federal appeals court asserted that the suit was invalid.
Judge Richard A. Jones of the Seattle district court dismissed the lawsuit once before after finding that the patent did not adequately describe a complete invention, making it invalid. The June 13 federal appeals court ruling upheld that previous dismissal.
Richard Medway, Nintendo of America’s deputy general counsel, said in a statement:
“We are very pleased with this result. Nintendo has a long tradition of developing unique and innovative products, while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. Nintendo continues to aggressively defend itself against patent trolls. After many years of litigation, the decision today reflects an appropriate resolution of this case.”
