Rumor: More talk of a SNES Mini coming this year

A couple of months ago, we heard that Nintendo could be planning a SNES Mini / SNES Classic Edition. No details were provided at the time, but a release by the end of the year is apparently planned.
Destructoid now has its own report stating that the SNES Mini will be available this year – specifically in time for the holidays. The site spoke with three different GameStop managers who said that the hardware is coming. It’s unclear how much they know and if what was mentioned can be trusted, but one manager said that Nintendo partially wants “foot traffic”.
Nintendo revealed the NES Classic Edition in mid-July last year for a November launch. If the SNES Mini is happening this year, perhaps an announcement could be made next month.

Rumor: A look into what happened with MercurySteam’s Metroid pitch for Wii U and 3DS

It was rumored a couple of years ago that MercurySteam attempted to pitch a Metroid game for Wii U and 3DS. Then in 2016, the studio denied that report. What makes things really interesting is that, last week, Nintendo and MercurySteam announced Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS.
So what happened here? Liam Robertson, who reported on the rumor originally, shared his latest findings in a new video.

Rumor: Super Nintendo World concept art, details on what’s planned and cut

Unconfirmed concept art, renderings, and details surrounding Super Nintendo World are making the rounds. Parkscope has since published a report with apparent insight into what’s staying and what’s been scrapped since those images were created.
Here’s what we know based on the site’s article:
– General layout and original entrance to Super Nintendo World shown
– Enter through Peach’s castle (located roughly where Animal Actors is now) into a large indoor area
– The indoor area would feature a Nintendo World Store, a Pokemon area (not elaborated on), Luigi’s Pizza (don’t think too hard about what they’d do with the other Luigi’s Pizza), a small tea cups like ride with Koopas, and a Bullet Bill TTA-like rid
– Going clockwise around the land is a Kirby young kids area with one ride and a kids wet/dry play area
– Kirby area has apparently been cut
– Donkey Kong Island takes inspiration and setting from the Donkey Kong Country series
– The first attraction is a large kids play area tree fort similar to the one Donkey Kong has at the beginning of each game
– The second attraction is an outdoor coaster using the boom coaster patent
– This coaster will be a new attraction and not a retheme of the Woody Nuthouse coaster
– At this point the coaster is remaining in the final plans
– Unclear if the kids play structure remains
– Mario Kart ride concept has evolved since the initial proposal
– The ride will retain the same scope and scale as the concept art
– There’s a debate about the use of projections and “AR” glasses in the ride to replicate the battle items during racing
– AR will be used to show the shells, bananas, and other items on the track
– Bowser’s Airship ride and Luigi’s Mansion interactive play area shown in concept art
– These concepts seem to be sacrificial lambs for Mario Kart
– When the budget restraints hit these will be the first attractions removed so the Mario Kart ride doesn’t get touched
– Hyrule/The Legend of Zelda area apparently cut from the final plans
– In prior released images you can see a preshow with Princess Zelda and the implementation of the ‘puzzle moving theater’ patent
– Other famous areas from the series like the Great Deku Tree and Kokiri Village show up in the land along with an “interactive area”
– What is not leaked, but expected to be coming to the land, is the Yoshi dark ride
– The Yoshi dark ride will be an all ages ride aboard Yoshi ride vehicles
– Refocus on Mario and Donkey Kong only for Phase 1 the Zelda area
– Smaller attractions, and Kirby area have been jettisoned to future expansions in other parks

Rumor: Super Nintendo World details for Universal Studios in Orlando

Much of the recent news surrounding Super Nintendo World has focused on the upcoming park in Tokyo. However, we do know that there are plans in the United States as well, and Channel 9 claims to have some details.
The Woody Woodpecker and Barney attractions are said to be closing down. A Mario Kart ride will be taking over the area, which will apparently be “a moving track ride where guests wear augmented reality glasses to feel like they’re moving through a video game.” Additionally, Channel 9 claims Super Nintendo World will feature “a Donkey Kong roller coaster, plus a number of interactive areas with plans for floating coins in mid-air that will spin on a kind of magnetic system.”
Rick Munarriz with The Motely Fool said the following about the Mario Kart ride:
“It will not be a basic car ride. Whether it’s augmented reality or some kind of scoring thing in the real world. There will be a score element, race element to it and that is what’s going to make the ride re-rideable.”

Rumor: Ubisoft had internal concept of Mario and Rabbids adventure game during the Wii era

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle should finally be announced at E3 this week. Before that game existed though, Ubisoft apparently had interest in mashing the two franchises together during the Wii era.
It seems that a formal pitch was never actually made to Nintendo, and it ended up as nothing more than an internal concept at Ubisoft. Nintendo may have shut things down before talks ever progressed in the slightest.

Smash Bros. Switch rumor heats up with supposed screenshots leak (fake)

Update 2 (6/1): The person behind the images has come forward confirming that the “leak” is fake. That’s the end of it, folks!
Update: While it’s not been made absolutely official, we can close the book on this one. The evidence here and certain sites such as GameXplain stating outright that the images were fabricated are enough.
Original (5/30): One game heavily rumored for Switch ever since the system’s reveal is Smash Bros. Early speculation suggested that Nintendo would eventually bring out something that mixes the Wii U and 3DS versions together into one ultimate package. With Nintendo’s big E3 presentation just two weeks away, the Smash Bros. Switch rumor is back in the news.
Unconfirmed screenshots from Smash Bros. on Switch are beginning to spread like wildfire online. The images appear to originate from 4Chan. Although anyone can post on the site under anonymity – making some rumors dubious – reports have panned out correctly from time to time in the past. In fact, before Nintendo’s Switch unveiling in January, someone accurately leaked the full slate of titles that appeared at hands-on events.
A first glance at the Smash Bros. screenshots would lead us to believe that they’re the real deal, or at least that someone put in a lot of effort here. But you know what people say these days: anyone can create a fake leak. Switch will undoubtedly receive a Smash Bros. game at some point, though we definitely can’t say that these images can be trusted. If they are true, we’re looking at some new content like Target Smash and improved visuals in the 3DS stages.

Rumor: Nintendo increasing Switch production, targeting 18 million units by March 2018

A new report from Financial Times claims that Nintendo is increasing production of Switch. The outlet’s report is based on information obtained from “people close to the company”. With demand not being met and consumers becoming frustrated, production is apparently seeing a boost.
Financial Times says Nintendo “is now targeting Switch hardware production of 18m units for the 12 months ending March 2018.” Nintendo previously set a forecast of ten million units for the current financial year.
For its part, Nintendo is denying an increase of Switch’s production “to that level”. Since its forecast has already been determined, it would be unlikely for the company to come out any say anything official to Financial Times.
Rumor: The Legend of Zelda & Pokemon TCG mobile games in the works according to Wall Street Journal

Nintendo has been in the mobile game market for a while now and has released several games, with more on the way. According to the Wall Street Journal, one of Nintendo’s next mobile games will be one based on The Legend of Zelda. Supposedly, “people familiar with the matter” said that a Zelda mobile game would be released sometime after the Animal Crossing mobile game, which is apparently being released in the latter half of 2017, although the release timing and release order could still change. Neither Nintendo nor DeNA commented on the matter.
That’s not all, though – according to the Wall Street Journal, The Pokemon Company is planning to release a new Pokemon Trading Card Game app on mobile devices. This is peculiar since a Pokemon TCG app already exists and can be played on mobile games – Pokemon TCG Online has been around for a while and is still supported to this day.
As always, takes rumors like this with a grain of salt. While the WSJ is usually fairly reliable when it comes to their sources and a Zelda mobile game isn’t exactly a far-fetched idea, this is far from an official confirmation. Thankfully, E3 is right around the corner, so we might hear more about either of these rumored games in a couple of weeks.
Amazon UK cancelling Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia pre-orders

Some concerns are being raised regarding the overseas release of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia. Amazon UK is cancelling pre-orders that had been previously been placed. In an email to customers, the retailer states: “Our supplier has informed us that this item is no longer available.”
Over on Amazon US, the listing for Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia has been pulled. However, it’s still up on Amazon Canada, Amazon Germany, and Amazon France.
The Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia is supposedly planned for June 15 outside of Japan. We should be finding out pretty soon if that date is still on track.
