Two Strikes preview

Typically when I’m playing a fighting game, it doesn’t take much to recover from a sloppy combo or a mild beating from an opponent; there are usually plenty of chances to get my fighter back on their feet when my skills inevitably lapse. Two Strikes, on the other hand, isn’t quite so merciful. This upcoming fighting game from Retro Reactor promises exactly what it says on the tin: take damage twice, and you’re dead, often in gloriously gory fashion. I had the chance to demo the game briefly at Day of the Devs in San Francisco, and while I didn’t have enough time to get wholly acquainted with the nuances of battle, I enjoyed familiarizing myself with the tense, careful dance of Two Strikes’ vicious combat.

A police officer in his 40s at Japan’s Tenri Police Station has been reprimanded after playing Switch while on duty. Aside from receiving a warning from the director of the Nara prefectural police department, his pay will be deducted as well.

According to a report from The Japan News, the officer used a Switch ten times for a total of seventeen hours between November 2023 and February 2024. Again, this was while he was on duty. Police say that work was neglected when he connected his system to a TV in the break room at the police box.

Yoko Shimomura Super Mario RPG interview

Yoko Shimomura played a key role in Super Mario RPG as back in the day, she was the game’s composer. Music is one of a few reasons why the title is beloved today.

Shimomura came back for the new remake and updated the tracks for the modern era. However, players can switch to the original music if they prefer.

In a previous feature on Daion, Shimomura shared a few words about her work. She mentions feeling pressure living up to the Super Mario name while also feeling “incredibly lucky”. We also get to hear about wanting the Switch version’s music to remain faithful to the original.
