[Review] Return to PopoloCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale
Posted on 8 years ago by Patrick(@Patricklous) in 3DS, 3DS eShop, Features, Reviews | 5 Comments
System: 3DS
Release date: March 1, 2016
Developer: Epics
Publisher XSEED Games
If there was an award for the most unlikely RPG revival of 2016, it’d have to go to Return to PopoloCrois. This series started out as a comic but became a cult classic game series in Japan thanks to a string of games on the original PlayStation. Now it returns for modern audiences, but Return to PopoloCrois is very much a return to the early days of 32-bit RPGs. It also brings in elements from the franchise formerly known as Harvest Moon, mixing the farming with a more traditional RPG experience. The two titles have a similarly peaceful pastoral setting (and apparently a large female fanbase in Japan) so it initially seems like a good mix, but unfortunately the gameplay side of things is a bit lacking.
Hyper Light Drifter’s Wii U version “currently in limbo”
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U eShop | 16 Comments
The Wii U version of Hyper Light Drifter is “currently in limbo,” according to Heart Machine. Today’s update was shared as part of a new post over on Kickstarter.
During Hyper Light Drifter’s early days, Heart Machine “had information about our engine”. The team was hoping this would result in a relatively simply port to Nintendo’s console. But now, Heart Machine says Hyper Light Drifter is in jeopardy of missing out on Wii U due to “ongoing internal contractual issues beyond our control between the platform holder and engine developer”.
You can read Heart Machine’s full update from the Kickstarter post below.

Fire Emblem Fates has been on just about every strategy RPG fan’s radar within the last year or so, with enthusiasts of the genre patiently anticipating the next title in the series to re-immerse themselves in a world with such beauty and intrigue equally spread between its gameplay and characters. Does Fire Emblem Fates build upon on its predecessors in all the right ways, or was it fated for failure?

Mega Man Legacy Collection’s 3D support isn’t too extensive
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News | 2 Comments
Most 3DS games support stereoscopic 3D, but there are some that don’t. In the case of Mega Man Legacy Collection, there is some 3D functionality… just not much.
Dennis is currently playing through Mega Man Legacy Collection for review. He tells me that the menus are in 3D, but the games themselves aren’t. You can turn the slider on and see that the background becomes 3D, but it doesn’t do much since it’s just a basic black background, and for whatever reason there’s a flicker on the sides when you turn it on. It’s not like the 3D Classics or SEGA ports on the eShop.
As for Challenge Mode, these bite-sized gameplay segments are just like the main games where the background will have depth but the game is still flat. Museum Mode has depth while you’re scrolling through, but once you select what you want to look at it, the picture becomes flat again.
Pokken Tournament devs on why a 3DS version is unlikely
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News | 24 Comments
Pokken Tournament is heading to Wii U, but it won’t be on 3DS. Although a portable version is something that most fans weren’t expecting to happen, Bandai Namco has commented on why the game probably won’t be gracing Nintendo’s handheld.
Speaking with GameSpot, developer Masaaki Hoshino mentioned that it “would be a challenge” to replicate Pokken Tournament’s graphics on 3DS.
He said:
“It’s definitely a challenge to get it on the Wii U with what we’re doing right now. And it definitely would be a challenge to have the same graphical experience on the 3DS.”
As for Bandai Namco’s Katsuhiro Harada, he feels it’s more of a money issue.
“Programmer does not need technology. Programmer needs budget.”

The Pokemon Company not saying if Shadow Mewtwo is canon
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News | 8 Comments
Shadow Mewtwo was created in close collaboration with the minds behind Pokemon for Pokken Tournament. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the creature is a canonical part of the overall universe.
In an interview with Polygon, Pokken Tournament producer Masaaki Hoshino said:
“When we were originally coming up with the design, we worked very closely with The Pokémon Company and Game Freak to make sure everything was right. What happened was, we at Bandai Namco had the idea of making a really cool dark-colored Mewtwo, so we had one of our designers take a crack at it and then presented that to The Pokémon Company and Game Freak. They all thought it looked really cool, so then we worked together to brush it up.”
“Because everyone really liked Shadow Mewtwo, I have a personal hope that they’ll continue to use it, but it’s not really our decision, unfortunately.”
Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, who is also working on Pokken Tournament, weighed in as well:
“For this game, it is kind of a spin-off from the main series. It takes place in this area called the Ferrum Region, which means something like ‘Iron Region,’ playing back into the Tekken connection. So, within the context of this spin-off, [Shadow Mewtwo] is obviously a canonical character. Of course, how The Pokémon Company and Game Freak decide to use the character is up to them, but I think Mr. Hoshino’s passion for the character might inspire them and encourage them to use it!”
Polygon also reached out to The Pokemon Company and asked if Shadow Mewtwo can be considered canon. To that, a representative said “No comment.”
