Last month’s issue of GamesTM has a lengthy interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. As you would expect, the discussion is largely focused on the Super Mario Bros. series.

A few interesting comments came about when Miyamoto and Tezuka were asked if they ever made any choices that they were concerned about being controversial. Miyamoto started things off, and spoke about how it’s difficult catering to both advanced players and beginners.

He said:

“For me one of the things was maybe the gap between the really advanced players and the first-time players. The difficulty balance is always something that I hear frustrations about from the public, whichever way we decide to go. We always have the testing team test our game, but whatever they say is really fun, the first-time players might consider to be very difficult. One of the things I do sometimes at the later phases of development is go in and hear the testing team’s requests and actually pull that away and lower the barrier or change what it is they want. Sometimes I even hear from the testing team, ‘You’re destroying the fun’, but on the other hand, the flipside is you hear the first-time players saying ‘If I can’t clear a level it’s not fun for me. If I can’t complete a game it’s not fun for me’. The more years that have passed, the gap between advanced and first-time players has become wider.”

Let’s Talk #26: What are you playing? – October 2015

A new month is here! I’d love to know what everybody has been playing as of late, or intends to play in the weeks ahead.

I’ve been focusing on two main games really: Super Mario Maker and Ys: Memories of Celceta. Ys has been getting most of my time, but I’ve still been playing Super Mario Maker regularly. It’s fun to just boot up the game and mess around with a few levels. I’m not at all creative myself, yet I’m still finding a ton of enjoyment with it.

But what about you guys? What’s everyone playing these days?

Highlights from last week’s topic: Nintendo and movies

I think an animated Mario would be great. We never got a proper one, I think everyone would love to finally see that.

Kira – HylianKeyblade

I think a Zelda movie done by Studio Ghibli could be really interesting and there would probably be a lot of high quality work there ^^. Of course the Zelda movie then have to be in a anime format and I think the Zelda series can suit a anime look pretty well :-).

I do think Nintendo should start making movies more or at least anime/animation series to attract a new young audience like Pokémon and Youkai Watch have accomplished. Also I think it could be pretty cool to see Nintendo characters come to life through animation again ^^. (If done right).

Although some amiibo are losing their retailer exclusivity in North America, a new set of upcoming figures will be sold at just one store. It turns out that the amiibo for the Mii Fighters will be distributed at only Toys “R” Us. That information is based on the image above, which is a photo snapped from a display.

All of the Mii Fighters are scheduled for November 1. You’d have to think that after a few months have passed, the amiibo will be available at other retailers as well.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes contains a few multiplayer options. There’s Download Play which only requires a single copy of the game, local multiplayer with both players owning the title, and online.

We do have to point out one important detail regarding Internet play. Unfortunately, it seems that you can only play with people in the same region. If you’re in the United States and your friend is in Europe for example, it doesn’t sound like you’ll be able to pair up.

Before Conker’s Bad Fur Day became the game we know of today, it was a radically different project. The team originally set out on creating something like an interactive cartoon with characters that would have very expressive faces.

Rare showed more of Twelve Tales: Conker 64 in a new video today, including previously-unseen footage. Check it out below.

It shouldn’t be too long now before we get a first look at Nintendo and DeNA’s first mobile game. According to Japanese gaming analyst Dr. Serkan Toto, we’ll be seeing it “soon”. Toto also said that we should “expect the unexpected”.

Just like in Japan, Splatoon’s sixth North American Splatfest will be held next weekend. Players only need to answer this simple question: how would you rather travel, by car or by plane?

The Splatfest will begin on October 9 at 9 PM on the West Coast and October 10 at 12 AM on the East Coast. As usual, the event is held for a full day.

GameSpot recently spoke with Platinum Games’ Yusuke Hashimoto, one of the directors working on Star Fox Zero.

First, here’s what Hashimoto said about working with two screens:

“Those two screens, you can’t find that anywhere else. When we were doing Bayonetta 2, we just used that screen as a touch pad. With Star Fox, Miyamoto originally had the idea that he wanted to create a shooting game that used both of these screens, and then we said, okay, how can we combine this with Star Fox? Just having to use those two screens makes things interesting.”

“We’ve been working with action games long enough. We understand how the players play an action game, how they respond to an action game, how they’ll move, what they’ll do in the situational stuff. What we’re making here now, it’s totally a new learning experience for us, which is kind of fun to find out.”

Hashimoto also discussed the importance of nailing a solid 60 frames per second. The game not only runs at this speed on the television, but also on the GamePad.

“We’ve got them both moving at 60 fps, which is big for a lot of people, I think. But I think that it’s kind of a milestone in gaming, in a way. It’s not something that we have done ourselves before at Platinum, and it’s just not even something that has been done in gaming before. So it’s a lot of new challenges.”

Finally, Hashimoto briefly touched on Star Fox Zero’s delay. The decision was made in order to give the game more of a “Platinum feel”.

“We want to make it feel as great as possible. It’s easy to say [it was delayed] to increase its quality, or whatever, but that entails a lot, whether it be visuals, or controls.”

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes wasn’t only created by Nintendo. Interestingly, it appears that Grezzo also played a role in the game’s development.

Grezzo has been quite involved with the Zelda series over the years. The team worked on Ocarina Time 3D, Majora’s Mask 3D, and Four Swords Anniversary Edition.
